No FA: Is it ok to file "just in case" after acceptance?

Hi. My S will not get FA. Not a chance. But, I don’t want to close him out if anything happens to his dad or I’s jobs. Or if he simply wants to take out the student loan one year, (unlikely, but who knows).

My taxes are relatively simple W-2 based, and I am the custodial parent. So not a huge burden unless a school requires CSS bc his dad has a business. But I do not want to have to send to multiple schools “just in case”.

Once he commits in April/May, can we file just with that school? We aren’t looking for aid that may be “gone” by then (meaning filing so late).

And at a CSS school, is CSS still required just for the I subsidized loan portion?

You can always file a FAFSA for the Direct Loan. To be honest, you will have missed deadlines for other forms schools require.

If you really feel the need to apply for financial aid, do it adhering to the deadlines.

Most of the colleges my D is applying to require the CSS by Feb 1 or 15. That’s 8 colleges she will apply for FA, so,I think there is still time.

If I have to do it before he commits, we will not do it this year. He will not get aid, as I said, and I am not concerned about first year. As I said, I just don’t want to close him out for future years.

I know that I will miss CSS headlines, but I’m not sure it matters if we are only looking at loans?

If THIS is your concern, and the school requires you to applly as a frosh to be considered for later years, then you need to submit CSS. If something happened to either job (or death), then your child willl need institutional aid, and that means CSS.

Check with the schools, with some if you don’t apply the first year, you can’t get aid later, or so I’ve heard here at CC.

Ok. Thanks @mom2collegekids. I’ll check with his top 4, #4 he got in, so I suppose I can limit to those 4.

Sadly, with life insurance, we are both worth more dead than…well, you know;) so that isn’t an issue.

Do you know if your child is the beneficiary of your ex’s life insurance and can’t be changed to someone else? (GF, new wife, etc)?

(ack!!! apply! not applly!))

No, actually, until S is out of college, bebeficiary is me!

yay!!!

I spoke to one private U. They said if all you want is a patent plus, only the FAFSA must be filed, and the timing is not important for only that. And year one does not affect subsequent years.

I’ll call the others later!

FAFSA is free to send and you can sent to colleges in batches of 10 at a time.

I did not know that! Hadn’t gotten that far yet. Thanks:)
