No FA student

I'm not quite sure about this but I would just like to ask. I never applied for Financial Aid beacause well I don't need it. However it has occured to me that many people especially on this forum have. I was wondering if there's any tension at Deerfield (Where I will enroll) between the different groups although they of course say it's the opposite in the catalogue. However is there tension for example that non FA students think that the FA students are just are just a bunch of unclutivated hicks because they may not know how to use a tie a double Windsor knot correctly or something like that and the FA students think something like:

-He's not smart at all he only got in cause he's rich etc.

Serious answers only plz!!!

there’s not usually that kind of animosity from what i can tell.

But remember applying for FA does not mean that you are poor, me and my famiily are applying for FA only because thaf if we lived in a cheaper area like Kansas then we could attend but my parents pay about $8000 dollars a month for rent on a 5 bedroom house. I am I poor ? No but the cost of living is expensive in some areas and cheap at others… So it depends really .

Correction : *Am I poor ?

since I would be an FA student at all these schools I would just like to say that I would dislike when a non-FA student flaunts his/her wealth by exclaiming about all the fantastic places s/he has been and about all the countries that s/he has been to. I would also dislike when a FA student complains about how s/he has had such a rough life and doesn’t have enough money to afford a brand-new sweatshirt or something. It may just be my personality but I hate braggarts and cry-babies.

Disclaimer: Please don’t be affended by this post. It is just my personal opinions. I realize that I am being very stereotypical right now and not all people are like this, just a really small minority.

as a general consensus, absolutely not. certain individuals? probably.

most people are classier than that. don’t worry about it. FA kids (like me representtt!) know that FP kids are probably every bit as intelligent as us, if not more. it’s not their fault that the economy was really rough this year… and i’m sure that FPs know that FA kids aren’t country hicks or people from 3rd world countries that can’t clothe themselves or have clean drinking water…(for the most part)
anyways, as swissbrit said, cost of living can differ dramatically. if my parents made 125k in nyc, i’d definitely be on aid, but in wyoming it could be a completely different story…
anyways, i hope i helped (:

@ 2010: i agree with that… FP kids, you don’t need to brag about your fleet of private jets, and FA kids don’t need to go around complaining about everything. haha. again, no offense intended :P

I agree hopeful, by the way I did not want to come off as a braggart…

2010 hopeful- i agree, i would not like it if someone was disappointed because their parents wouldnt allow them to take the private jet to australia over break or something like that.

I’m a student at DA and I can only tell you my experience. I think as teenagers no one wants to be labeled/advertised as rich or poor - if someone brags about their wealth, it’s generally accepted that they are immature and everyone moves on. Because kids don’t like their identities to be tied with their financial background, FA isn’t a large part of Deerfield conversation (again, this is my experience).

I don’t mean to indicate however that ‘touchy’ issues aren’t openly discussed. Diversity, etc. enjoy a constant open dialogue. But what kind of ‘money’ you come from is simply irrelevant, and it’s a pride of mine to be a member of a student body that appears to understand that. This may have not been the case 30 years ago, but it is now.

On the other hand, you can’t stop kids from wearing nice clothes. We have a semi-formal dress code and there’s no reason a student should be out of line if he wears a nice blazer.

By the way, [this thread](Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA] - Prep School Admissions - College Confidential Forums) is best for these questions. We’re trying to make it the DA thread. If in the future you could direct them there I think you might find more kids prepared to answer

Thank you for all the answers I’d like to point ou that I don’t brag at ALL. My parents taught me a lot better than that and I don’t look down or up on somebody because of their financial situation. Gr8 answers thnx guys!

yes usually at at “elite (WASP)” institutions talking about money is very very uncouth

i can tie a double windsor knot but I’m on FA :p

Plus I live in the same area as swissbrit however we don’t pay 8k a month rent (far from it) but it wouldn’t be hard to do. If we lived in the middle of nowhere we could prolly afford it. I’m not poor at all by the majority of the populations reckoning, I come from a well off family just not 50k a year on education well off ;). Personally I wouldn’t care less if someone was FP unless they were discriminating against me for it. I am a little worried about kids having known each other for years having moved in the same circles ect… I currently go to Public School but I used to be FP at private school at home.

hahaha

i can barely tie a tie

Uniforms. I could tie one by 7  I had to.

Double-windsor knots are fat and unattractive. Most use the four-in-hand knot, or bowties.

I agree, tell that to the school…

Blue- I used to go to private also lol. Arent u from australia ?

AGREED! You’d have to have a head the siz of a beach ball to pull off a knot that big. Son knows the 4-in-hand and that’s it.

He learned it on youtube!!! Seriously. The internet is amazing.

Nope Im not swissbrit

Now the bowtie is a bit more tricky, not because of the knot, which is the same one used to tie one’s shoe laces, but because of the width of the tie and trying to get the second loop through the knot. But, once mastered it is the most attractive of all.
