No fafsa, No scholarship?

Hi, my son will be the incoming engineering freshman of UT Austin this fall, we didn't fill out the form of FAFSA because we are not qualified to apply (probably my understanding to FAFSA is wrong), His Sat composite score is close to 1600 and we expect him to get scholarship from ut, but my friend told me without sending FAFSA, he won't have a lot of chance to get any scholarship.

Can anyone give me some direction?

Probably not. I know for many of the scholarship applications a FAFSA is required as a basic criterion. Even if you won’t qualify for aid they still want one on file. I’m not sure when the filing deadline is (was) but i’m nearly certain it has passed for freshman.

The whole thing is a bit convoluted so I may be wrong. You’d probably do best to contact the university because I think one way or another they’re going to want a FAFSA from you

It is necessary for many other scholarships, but the general merit-based scholarship that Cockrell usually doles out to students with high SAT scores does not require you to have FASFA completed.

superqq, the priority deadline has passed (maximum grant eligibility date), but you can still fill out a FAFSA. I would suggest you check out the following link for more info. It’s pretty helpful. If you can’t find your answer there, you can give them a call.

First of all, I would like to thank mnaacd, frever and UTMom2 to respond my quest so fast, I had call UT financial aid office and also engineering scholarship office this afternoon, this is what I got:
The major scholarship had given away already, it is based on your academic performance, other than FAFSA.
I called engineering scholarship office and the lady told me next week will be the last week to give away the scholarship, if my son doesn’t get any mail from ut austin. then he won’t get anything.
Thank you for all of your help.
