My kid was admitted to Cornell with a likely letter notifying us that he was one the forty Tanner Dean's Scholar. We are thrilled with this admission. But yesterday we open the email and find Cornell will provide zero dollar financial support for us.

We are shocked by this news. Given our household income is barely over 70k, how could Cornell be so penny-pinching to international students. We have been in U.S. for ten plus years and my kid attended school here in U.S. from 1st to 12th. My green card application was severely backlogged in the system due to quota limitation. But we are about to file 485 next month and will perhaps get green card by the the fall semester. We are very disappointed with this zero dollar package. It is like a slap on our face and blame us for being an immigrant.

My kid have been admitted to other schools with generous package. But we really want to go to Cornell which sitting in a beautiful town of New York and has the best student cafe and vegetarian food.

What can we do? Can we ask Cornell to match the package we get from other top schools?

Wow I feel your pain. The problem is Cornell only has limited funds to sponsor international students and only do it to maintain some diversity, so doing that might not help so much. But it wouldn’t hurt to send an email. If it helps you can try some scholarship stuff like Cappex etc though I’d rather go to the school who gave me financial aid.

Feeling the same pain. I was thrilled when I got into Cornell, but absolutely shocked and disappointed when I received $0 in financial aid. I am from Canada and don’t feel very “international.” I want to attend but I don’t know what to do.

Award Match Initiative
To improve Cornell’s competitiveness in recruiting and enrolling undergraduate students, Cornell will commit to increasing grant aid by matching the family contribution components and lower loan level of financial aid offers from other Ivy schools. We will also strive to match the family contribution components and lower loan levels of financial aid offers from Stanford, Duke, and MIT.

I emailed to Cornell financial aid office and they said it is impossible for us to get any financial aid since my kid is an international student and there is very limited fund for international students.
My kid has taken 14 AP classes and will be the valedictorian of the class (600+). He scored 2400 in SAT and 34 in ACT. He also had many other great accomplishments in high school years.
Since the huge backlog of residence card application. my family won’t be qualified to submit green card application until late this month or earlier next month. Yet, it seems very unlikely that Cornell will consider our request for financial aid.
I have stayed in this country for 11 years and paid tax for 10 years. Yet, we’re considered aliens and Cornell made it crystal clear that aliens are not qualified for financial aid.
