Is this true? I know it may seem to early to worry about this but I'm trying to calculate my finances and how much rent I can afford. My military benefits only support me up to 4 years and I know I will get stuck at for at least an extra semester in UCB after reviewing the graduation requirements. This means I will have no more income on my last 6 months at UCB and financial aid is the only thing I can depend on. Anyone know if you still get some amount on your 5th year?

You can only spend 4 semesters at UCB (5 if you’re double majoring or if you’re majoring in engineering) so you should worry about that first.

I’m going to be an EECS major. I already reviewed all the requirements and there is no way I can get it done within 2 years without overwhelming myself. I didn’t get into any summer classes cause I submitted my SIR late.

you don’t get financial aid after 2 years. If you stay an extra year, you need to pay the tuition. However, UCB has many scholarship opportunities, so you won’t pay the full tuition.

I packed my summer schedule with 15 units after my first year here. UC Davis has two summer sessions, so I took 7 units during session 1, and 8 units during session 2. I don’t know how summer works for Cal, but hopefully you’ll be able to do something similar and get out “on time.” If you do have to borrow, the rule of thumb is to not borrow any value over what you expect to make during your first year on the job.

I don’t really understand how this works so if someone could shed some light on me it would be very appreciated. I’m attending UCLA in the fall as a psychology major and thinking about picking up a minor in neuroscience because I want to get into behavioral neuroscience for grad school. I also really want to study abroad as I feel like it is a once in a lifetime opportunity you can only do in college so I don’t want to miss the chance. In order for me to finish up my upper divs, pick up a minor, study abroad, and get research experience I’m going to need more than 2 years. possibly not the whole 5th year, I’m guessing about one or two more extra quarters.

My question is, doesn’t financial aid only run out if you exceed your UNIT CAP not the number of years you stay? I mean obviously you can’t stay there for like 10 years but I was told that as long you’re not exceeding your unit caps, you’ll be safe for financial aid. My friend’s brother went to UCSD and graduated after his first quarter of his 5th year. He told me his financial aid didn’t affect him because he was still within his unit cap.

All this talk about no longer getting financial aid after your 4th year is really scaring me. Please if anyone can give me some info I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

I finally found a website from UC Berkeley financial aid:

[UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office: Undergraduates Maintaining Eligibility SAP](http://students.berkeley.edu/finaid/undergraduates/sap.htm)

Transfer students have financial aid up to 3 years. Heck, even freshman are eligible up to 5 years as long as they complete the minimum amount of units…and someone here said no financial on the 5th year…lmao well at least now I know.

The problem is getting that extra year, or even semester of enrollment approved. UC Berkeley seems to be extremely strict about the two year limit for transfer students, maybe more so than the other UCs. I think Engineering students do not have much trouble getting approval for at least one more semester but for most transfers it is very rarely granted.
