No Financial Aid

So I applied to UCLA, UCSD, UCI, and Cal State Fullerton. I live in San Diego and i'll be going to college this fall (hopefully). The issue is that I just got news that I don't receive any money for Cal Grants because my parents apparently make too much money.

I have two older brothers who are also in college so next year there will be three of us, my parents make $115k a year. I'm the only one who has heard back from Cal Grants so far, but I'm assuming that they are in the same boat as me.

So are my brothers and I screwed? For both of them their entire tuition was paid for for the last 3 years thanks to Cal Grants. Also I have a 4.0 cal grant GPA so that wasn't the issue. There is no way that I can afford college without financial help and my parents can't contribute enough money.

Also I've applied to about ten scholarships and I havent won any of them.

So my question is what do I do? I know that community college isn't bad but I have worked so hard throughout high school, and to not be able to go to UCLA (my dream school) for not receiving financial aid would really upset me. Is there any way for someone like me to get the money I need for school?

If you get into a UC, you may get a UC grant since it sounds like your EFC will be low enough. What is your EFC with 3 in college?

Did your family’s income increase a lot? If your siblings got it last year, but not this year, then the income must have gone up.

I don’t remember how Cal Grants exactly work as far as qualifying. Is it strictly income based or is the number of children in college considered?

Anyway, UCLA will very likely give you aid. It won’t be a Cal Grant, but it will be a “UC grant.”

With that income and 3 in college, I’m guessing that your EFC is around $10k. Is that true? If so, then you likely will get a UC grant. How much will your family pay?

Did you try using the NPC on UCLA’s website?

This what I got from UCLA’s NPC with your info. I put that there are 5 people in your family.

It gives a EFC of about $7k and that you’d get a $15,444 UC grant.

Family size is taken into account. Number of children in college is not.

^^

Thanks. I thought that may be the case (which is odd).

However, since the UCs have gotten really good at providing aid for instate students, even those who don’t get Cal Grants, I think this student will be fine IF he goes to a UC. The CSUs may not be as generous.

This student has a good amount of “need”, so a UC will likely give him grants.

Also, since the parents’ income seems like it must have gone up by a fair chunk, maybe they can afford to contribute a bit (more?) to the kids’ tuition.

Do the siblings go to a UC? If so, then maybe they weren’t being given Cal Grants, maybe they were given UC grants???

Otherwise, it seems that the family income would have had to have gone up by about $20 - 25k or so (if I’m understanding this correctly and family size is 5 or 6.)

There’s 7 in my family, and both of my siblings go to cal state fullerton. And does the EFC mean money out of pocket and the UC grant would be what the school covers?

Also I think that the income went up about 20k from last year.

Does anyone know about the process of getting this UC grant? Is there an application or should I contact the office of financial aid for the UC that I decide to go to?

And does the EFC mean money out of pocket and the UC grant would be what the school covers?

EFC doesn’t always mean “money out of pocket.” Sometimes people have to pay more. You have to look at the details of your FA pkg.

In the NPC estimate, it is showing that you’d get about a $15k grant. That covers tuition.

It looks like you’ll be given about $9k in a combo of loans and work-study.

Your parents will be expected to pay about $7k

and, that all should cover the costs.

Now, if you’re economical with books and R&B, you may not have to borrow as much. And, if you work over the summer and help pay for some things, your parents may not have to contribute as much.

*Also I think that the income went up about 20k from last year.
*

If your brothers really did get Cal Grants in the past, it looks like they’re the ones who will really lose out since CSUs do not do what UCs do. They’re the ones who are going to have problems paying for next year.

Does anyone know about the process of getting this UC grant? Is there an application or should I contact the office of financial aid for the UC that I decide to go to?

You don’t do anything except submit FAFSA and have it sent to your schools.

You, your brothers, and your parents need to sit down to discuss how the higher family income will affect your brothers’ aid.

Each child may have to work over the summer to bring in as much as possible. Your parents may have to “help them more,” since they’ll lose their Cal Grants, which may mean that they won’t be able to pay the full amount of your EFC.

Do your brothers commute or do they live on/near campus?
