No financial safety

^
Thats how much Iowa cost without room and board, Michigan cost that price with room and board for in-staters.

Yeah I know MSU has a program that will meet 100% need if accepted, I never discovered University of Michigan program but I have heard it mention a few times on cc.

momofthreeboys quote - *Mom2Colleges: Iowa Out of State average tuition & fees: $22,198 compared to University of Michigan IN state average tuition & fees: $23,721 for fresh/soph and $25,203 for juniors/seniors and State is not far behind. Michigan is a very expensive state for college education. *

What?? NO!

The in-state tuition and fees for UMich aren’t that high. That’s the COA rate.

The in-state rate for UMich is about $12-13k per year for tuition and fees.

Iowa out-of-state tuition/fees is much more expensive than UMich in-state rate

I don’t think there are ANY publics that charge their in-state students more than $16k for tuition and fees. Penn St is the highest for in-state and it’s under $15k for tuition and fees.

At neither school can Coolbreeze live at home so yes, I included room and board figures and used the reported COA figures as reported by the colleges.

I live 45 miles from University of Iowa and spent my first 2 years of college there. We’re probably in Iowa City about once a month. It is the school that has the most applications from students in our area, so I have had a lot of experience seeing their offers.

If you received an offer from Iowa that puts it on par with in-state Michigan costs, then you have something very rare in your hands. In my experience, I have only seen one good offer from Iowa in 10 years. And that was for a very good music student last year. They are trying to rebuild their music department as it’s facilities were wiped out in a flood two years ago. The city experienced one of the worst floods in Iowa history in 2007. The buildings along the river were pretty severely damaged. Hancher Auditorium, probably the most beautiful building on campus and the center for the music and fine arts program, was the hardest hit.

It’s a classic big 10 campus. Lot’s of hills… beautiful quad… takes up a large section of two towns… great football… very diverse…

The university has had a housing shortage problem for years. If Iowa is a serious option, get your housing request in ASAP. Avoid Burge Hall. It’s been known for years as the goof off, forget your studies, drink lots of beer, party champion dorm of the Midwest.

The west side of the river is dominated by the medical center and the sports complexes. The east side of the river is where most non-med classrooms are located along with the social center of the campus.

Although the campus is large, they have an excellent bus system. You can get pretty much anywhere on campus in short order with it.

OOS COA for Iowa is about $34,000.

momofthreeboys quote: ***At neither school can Coolbreeze live at home so yes, I included room and board figures and used the reported COA figures as reported by the colleges. ***

Then you need to compare apples with apples…you need to include Iowa’s OOS COA, too. You only included Iowa’s OOS tuition/fees.

You need to compare UMich in-state COA with Iowa’s OOS COA - instead, you were comparing UMich COA to only Iowa’s OOS tuition/fees. That’s isn’t an accurate comparison, as you can see.

So…in-state COA at UMich is about $24k
and…the OOS COA at Iowa is about $35k (Iowa is $11k more per year for Coolbreeze)

So, no, they’re not comparable in cost for Coolbreeze UNLESS Iowa gives him scholarship/grant/FA money to bring the cost down to UMich’s costs. Hence, my earlier question of whether he was assured of some kind of $$ help to make it his safety.

Now, back to MissPick… :)

I love UT Knoxville. Knoxville is a cool town with great people. What does Pickwick want to study?

Whoops, nvm mixed her up with another poster.

Thanks for the information.

Is there a notable reason why you transfered?

I decided to change majors to something UI didn’t have. So I took advantage of the opportunity and headed south to Florida.

I miss Florida.

^
Oh, well that makes sense.
