No GED required?

So I am currently in my 3rd year of community college and truthfully my grades aren’t all too great. I literally have a few C’s, couple of F’s, and a couple of withdraws. I have not completed my GEDs, not even close. I had pretty decent grades in high school, but not good enough to apply for a university. As you can see, I am in no way near graduating and I’m already 21. I really want to get out of community college and into a university. There are certain circumstances that prevent me from doing well. Being stuck in a community college has dawned on me and I really need to get out of this environment. I am certainly not implying that community college should be looked down upon, I am merely saying that I am disappointed as to why I have to attend school here. I really need someone’s help. I need to find a loophole to get around the GED requirement and be able to transfer into a university, preferably a state college university. I know people have had their setbacks and I shouldn’t pity myself, but this is a real issue for me. Please let me know if there is any way because I am willing to do anything. Anything that does not interfere with my moral standing. Please help.

What state are you in? In California, you do not require a GED to be admitted to a university; however, there are other requirements you must meet.

Do a little research into your state.

I am in California. I did not know that GED is not a requirement. I have done some research, but I haven’t found anything that is similar to my situation. What other requirements besides completing GED is there? And how could I be sure that they would even look at my application?

Per the below website, “California community colleges may admit any nonresident possessing a high school diploma or equivalent or any person over the age of 18 who, in the judgment of the board, is capable of profiting from the instruction offered.”

As you can see, a GED is not required for CC. You can then transfer to a CSU or UC once you’ve completed the minimum credits and courses for your intended major.

I’m not sure how not having a HS diploma or GED may affect financial aid since there’s been changes in the past few years. You use to be able to apply as “ability to benefit” to obtain finaid, but I’m not sure if that option is still available.

Did you attend UCLA?

Yes, but I transferred to another university and completed my degree there.

Note: As a follow up to my post (#4) above, if you’re going to transfer from a CC to a university, you can also complete your GED to ensure there won’t be any financial aid issues if “ability-to-test” has been done away with.

I understand. I just need more information. I want to ensure that I do get into a university…CalPolyPomona specifically, but I know that my academic standing won’t suffice. What I’m saying is that in my situation the only way for be to get in, is having someone on the inside, you know? I don’t know what else to do. I know it’s a long shot, but I’m not giving up until I find a way.

Right, I understand the financial aid process, but at this time, that is not my main concern. Thank you for the information, though.

The two links below are good sources for CSU and UC admission requirements, for both Frosh and Transfer applicants. As long as you meet the minimum stated requirements, you are eligible for transfer. However, satisfying the minimum requirements does not guarantee admissions nor does this equate to your application being competitive; it just means you are eligible for transfer.

You don’t require “someone on the inside” to get accepted to a university. It’s not as complicated as you may think it is. All the requirements are available online and with a little perseverance, you’ll get to CalPoly-Pomona.

Yes I understand that. This is so depressing to me. If I had only focused everything would be fine. But I’m in this predicament and trying to find a way to go around the requirements. It isn’t complicated, I agree. I should have done what needed to be done in the first place. Right now I do not have the requirements they are looking for, but I am still trying to find a way to get admitted this Fall. Crazy, right?

Is attending a different CC an option to satisfy the requirements or are you intent on getting admitted to CPP (or any other university) without the requirements? Without satisfying the requirements, it’s going to be more than likely a very non-productive endeavor.

At this point, with or without a GED, you need to meet the minimum requirements (via CC), otherwise your application will most likely be automatically rejected. Refocus and take the necessary courses to gain transfer eligibility. It’s never too late.

My mind set is to not have community college as an alternative. I am solely intent on getting admitted to CalPolyPomona or any state colleges. It’s a long shot, but let’s just say I have no more options left. I sound immature and in a fantasy land hoping that anything is possible, but right now I am praying for the impossible.
