You can take languages pass/fail. I'm not sure, though, how it works out in terms of language classes being 1.5 credits (with a .5 credit drill). You might or might not get the .5 credit to be pass/fail. But I think most people do pretty well in their language classes (if you intend to continue in the language, it's not something you can or should half-ass), so wait and see how you do first semester.

Does anyone know if the pass/fail semester applies to transfer students?

I don't think that transfers get a pass/fail first semester at Swat - it's just for freshmen, as far as I know. But you still get the 4 pass/fail classes like any other student, I'd imagine, so maybe you could still use them all at once? Haha.

Haha.. I think this is great to soothe the grade deflation at Swat..

Hmm.. we decide that the course we take is P/F BEFORE we start the course right?

No, you can make the P/F decision up to a certain point. I just checked the Registrar's site, and it's a bit confusing--it says the form must be turned in during the first 2 weeks, and not before, but it also says the deadline is by the 9th week of class.

Yeah, you can decide to make a class pass/fail up until the 9th week of classes, I'm not sure what the 2nd week is referring to. Maybe just a reminder that drop/add ends after 2 weeks...but electing to take a class pass/fail gives you that really enormous window of 9 weeks - usually after a midterm, after a couple of assignments - to see how you're doing before you make the decision to go pass/fail. It's greatttt.

^thanks anyway..!

Drop/add ends after 2 weeks, but you can decide on pass/fail till 9th week.

A word of warning to premeds - your premed requirements are never pass/fail! You have to keep a printout of your first semester shadow grades too, as you will have to submit them to med schools.
