no harm in staying on waitlist, right?

I got accepted into Duke--my top choice. however, my parents wish that i remain on the waiting list for harvard. there's no harm in doing so right? I guess what i'm trying to understand is that there are no stipulations?

Nope. If you want to stay on the waiting list, stay on…understand the odds, and make sure you keep it out of your mind. As of right now you’re going to Duke, and that’s the way you should think. Good luck, btw. Duke is an excellent school.

I personally think it’s unfair to stay on the WL if you have no intention of going to Harvard. Of course, you won’t be sending updates or a letter of continued interest, so it’s less likely you’ll be accepted. Were you admitted, however…

Sure, there’s no harm in staying on the waitlist. If you get in, you can still turn Harvard down if you prefer Duke. I have noticed that many students who apply to Harvard prefer other school until a Harvard acceptance is on the table, and then they choose Harvard. I was like that myself. I think it’s a good idea to love the bird in hand.

harms other waitlisted people–

Doesn’t harm other waitlisted people unless the OP gets an offer from Harvard and then accepts it.

If the OP turns down Harvard, Harvard will offer the spot to someone else.
