Do I have to disclose anything about my dads income on my apps If my parents have been divorced 16 out of my 17 years of life. My dad does not give any $$$$$ for support and we barely talk. Do I have to even mention him for financial aid? My mom (who never remarried) makes less than 20k... Can I just leave my dad off the app process?

For schools that only use FAFSA and do not ask for NCP info, then you only use your mom’s info.

However, for schools that use CSS Profile and/or require NCP info, then you either have to include your dad’s info…or ask for a waiver…which you may or may not get.

Since you’re low income, you have to be VERY careful where you apply. Even with an EFC of 0, you may not get enough aid to pay for school. Most schools do not meet need.

What state are you in?

What are your stats?

What schools are you considering?

If your mom’s income is that low, you would likely have a family contribution of $0 or so. That being the case, you would be eligible for the full Pell Grant $5500…and a $5500 Stafford loan. You could also get some state aid for low income students…you need to research that in YOUR state.

In any event…the Stafford loan and full Pell grant would likely pay for you to attend a community college… if you live at home. That is an option that can be held if the finances don’t work out elsewhere.

We live in Fl. GPA 5.1, number 5 in my class ranking, yearbook editor in chief 4 years, fluent in sign language, act score 31…

Do you qualify for Bright Futures? Which level?

If so, then you’d likely get full or near full tuition at a Florida public. And you’d get a Pell grant and a Stafford loan.

I don’t think UF gives merit for a 31, but maybe some of the lower tier Florida publics might.

Are you going to test again?

What is your major?

Are you a likely NMSF?

I have 100% bright futures for a FL school however my preference is a out of state school, UNC is my first choice. I am going for medicine, chemistry is my major, I guess. I am not testing again. My SAT score is only a 1300, def not the best…I am hoping to get financial need based aid and get into UNC! I am just not sure how I will be able to qualify if I have to mention my dad:/

Not a national merit

If you’re planning on med school, do what you must to avoid debt for undergrad. If that means Florida in state, so be it.

UNC is a CSS Profile school…but it doesn’t require the CSS NCP form…does anyone know if they have their own NCP form?

UNC does put loans in their FA packages.

Anyway…UNC is very hard to get accepted OOS and they get a good amount of apps from your state, so your chances are iffy.

Your ACT 31 is good, but no assurances as an OOS student. Anyone know if UNC is need-aware for OOS students?

*I have 100% bright futures for a FL school however my preference is a out of state school, UNC is my first choice. I am going for medicine, chemistry is my major, I guess. I am not testing again. *

You really should test again. An ACT 32 is sometimes a magic number for acceptance and scholarships.

You need to minimize debt especially if your goal is med school…too much debt for med school. Aid isn’t the same for med school…it’s mostly big loans…not need-based grants.

Also, since GPA is very important for med school admissions, and the competition will be tougher at UNC, you’d might have a higher GPA at FSU than at UNC.

With BF, Pell and other aid, your costs would be covered at FSU. Do apply to FSU and other FL publics as back ups.

Florida is a big state…going to school in another area can be like going OOS.

my preference is a out of state school

I’d like to add a comment about this…

For a low income student, going to an OOS school can backfire because there are a lot of extra costs… I have a son who attends a school that is several states away. We have spent quite a bit so far just on one move in.

There are a lot of costs associated with going far away which a low income family can’t fund. If your mom wants to go to help you move in or just see the school, that can be costly…hotel, restaurants, transportation for 2 people, etc.

I just booked his flight home for fall break and now I’m looking for flights for the holidays. It all adds up.

your mom makes less than $20k per year…she won’t be able to help you much.

Have you visited UNC? If you do, keep track of the costs…you’ll be facing similar costs each time you come and go.
