No housing for Juniors or Seniors?

I have read and heard that UMD does not offer housing to juniors and seniors , if so, how far off campus would one have to go for an apartment, and how much do the rents usually go for in that area? Can you walk or is a car necessary, and is there a charge for parking in lots or is it residential areas that the students can park.

A lot of stuff I didn't expect.

The apartments are about 5-10 minutes away from campus. There are umd buses that have stops near the apartments...but they can be pretty inconvenient b/c they come every hour so they end up being overcrowded...also if its dark i dont suggest walking off-campus b/c there are a lot of crimes in the area...itd probably be best to bring a car or find a good car-pool system.

You should look at this link for general costs for off-campus:
<a href="http://www.resnet.umd.edu/announcements/fall2008housingoutlook/pdf/costoflivingcomparisons.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.resnet.umd.edu/announcements/fall2008housingoutlook/pdf/costoflivingcomparisons.pdf</a></p>

The more roommates you can find to live with...the cheaper it will be to live off-campus...and in terms of parking fees...its different for each place. The more pricier places like univ. town center have places where you can park...but other places i have heard ppl have gotten their cars towed and stuff. But i dont think you should have to worry about parking....a lot of off-campus students have cars and most dont have any problems

are sophomores guaranteed housing?

Sophomores are not technically guaranteed housing, but they essentially are. That's why they kicked off (all but 120) juniors and all the seniors--so they can guarantee spots for all the freshmen and sophomores.

CP has a lot of houses/apartments that are around, like on route 1 and stuff. on campus there's the south campus commons which are taken over by juniors and seniors since we can't get on campus. then there are the courtyards, which is technically off campus but it still works with UMD.. here, juniors and seniors make up the majority as well.

we also have the towers & the view, both apartment complexes. they are generally more expensive and farther from campus but like soccer said, there are definitely shuttles available, even if the times aren't as convenient as you'd like.

from what i hear, admissions is slowly but surely trying to fix the problem of too many students, and reslife/UMD is trying to fix the problem of too little beds. these things come in waves. for example, there was a time we had too many beds on campus, and now we have wayyyy too little. who's to say what will happen in the next 10 years? unfortunately i didn't catch a good wave.

Just for some general cost numbers...

Last year I lived literally 2 minutes from campus in a Knox Box apartment I shared with one other girl. Ours was renovated but many are not. We each paid $600/month plus utilities, but this past year our landlord raised the price to $800 which is much more in line with the other Knox Boxes.

Now I live by the metro, about a 10 minute walk from campus, in a 6-bedroom house and we each pay $620/month plus utilities.

Apartments in the View near the engineering school but about 15 minutes from the middle of campus run about $820 (correct me, someone who lives there). Parkside is further away and only has double rooms but rent is a bit cheaper. Towers is about 5 minutes from campus (near the Knox Boxes) and I think apartments are around $1800 for a 2-bedroom that holds 3 people. Each Towers apartment has a different landlord so they vary greatly.
