I'm a junior and hoping to someday become a Pediatric Oncologist. I have straight A's and I'm a good student, but I don't think I'll get into a big name Ivy League College (though I'd love to!) Haven't taken SAT's yet and hopefully gonna have done 5 or 6 AP's before I graduate. I go to a Jewish private school now, so there aren't really extra-curricular activities that I can do. I'd like to go somewhere good to get my undergrad, in the NY/NJ area. I was thinking NYU or Barnard, but I don't know how good they are and where they rank. The one thing holding me back is tuition. I'm looking for something prestigious, with a good name, but where I can still get a nice sized scholarship. Any suggestion??? Thank you!!!

If you intend to go to medical school, your goal is to maximize your GPA and minimize your debt. NYU, Barnard, Columbia or anything like that will not help with that unless you are pretty darn exceptional. NYU is bad for any sort of financial aid and Barnard is nice but I have no idea about aid and rigor. I’m assuming you aren’t local? I’m from Long Island and the reputation of NYU isn’t that great (it’s pretty much seen as over priced and a waste of money). I would suggest Fordham (they give some aid I’ve heard), CUNY Hunter, CUNY Brooklyn, Rutgers (if instate NJ), Hofstra, St. Johns (basically any where that will place you significantly over the median SAT/GPA). I would also look at SUNYs because the tuition is cheap, even for out of state residents. Stony Brook is good for pre-med but it’s very competitive there. University of Buffalo, Binghamton, Geneseo, or even Albany might be good choices for you. It all depends on your stats.

Geneseo, Geneseo, Geneseo…wonderful college and top academics!
