I have no idea where to start in applying for USAFA. I am a junior and have a horrible guidance counselor who does not help me in any way. Actually, I have no idea of my chances of getting into an academy, so any advice would be very much appreciated. Here’s all my info

if you are competitive from an SAT perspective than so far so good...you are going to want to figure out who the ALO for your area is....as they are kind of like gatekeepers for the admissions process.

You have the Academics and extracurricular's under control. Consider attending Summer Seminar Air Force Academy - Summer Seminar , this will give you a chance to see the Academy close up. You will be able to apply just after the new year. Take your PSAT, and prepare for your SAT and ACT testing next year. You will want between 58 and 62 on your PSAT test for Math, Reading, and Writing. When you apply for Summer Seminar you will get a chance to meet your ALO (Air Liason Officer). This is an Air Force Officer, usually a Major/Lt Col who will interview you for admission to the Academy.

Quality is more important than quantity: Earn leadership positions in a few selected activities rather than being a member of many.

Proven excellence in an activity strengthens your record. Specific examples of leadership positions helpful for getting an appointment to the Academy include :

[ul]
[]Team captain
[]Student government officer
[]National honor society membership
[]Eagle/Gold award (scouting)
[]Billy Mitchell award (Civil Air Patrol)
[]School club/activity president/chairman[/ul]*

The only leadership position I have is an officer in my student council. My student council is really involved and I spend about 15 hrs. a week doing all of my work for them. That only on a normal week. Some weeks I can spend about 25 hrs., staying at the school until 10:30.

I did take the PSATs, which i think i bombed, but i will be taking the SATs in January.

Oh, and I'm a member of the National Honor Society.

Go to service academyforums.com, they have alot of info also. Call the academy and ask for tennis and track coach. Talk to them about the chances of being recruited.
Red flags go up when you don't state PSAT/SAT/ACT scores. Your GPA looks great, but remember they look at the whole pic (school transcript and SAT).
Also start doing the CFA so you can knock it out of the ballpark ...it is apart of the whole pic.

You look like you've got the extracuriculars covered, just try to do well with the tests. You can never really tell whats going to happen because you don't know who they have looked at before you or how they could look at what you have done. I'm not trying to scare you cause if you belong here they usually get you here. I had a lot less extracuriculars and I didn't have the best SAT scores but they let me in, so you kinda just have to trust that they are going to pick the people they think are right for the challenge.
