No interview?

Just a question about interviews!

A friend of mine applying to Wharton had an interview a couple weeks back for UPenn, and I (applying to CAS) haven't had one. Is this because I'm applying to a different college, or should I be worried that my rejection probably completely got thrown out for some reason?

Not having an interview could mean anything.

It could mean that there were no alumni in your area.
It could mean that Penn didn’t find anything wrong with your application and didn’t need an interview from you.
It could mean that Penn didn’t think an interview would be worth it.

It’s best not to worry about it. An interview shouldn’t make much of a difference.

(I live in Montana. I had a phone interview with an alumnus from New York.)

Actually, I believe the only reason that one wouldn’t get an interview is if there were no alumni in the applicant’s area. Penn, as well as many other schools, don’t “pre-screen” applicants for interviews.

@Frankw

but that’s the thing I’m wondering about. My friend in the same school as me got an interview, but I didn’t. And I know for a fact that there are alumni in the area who would be able to interview me i.e. my church leader.

Well the alumni in the area also have to volunteer for an interview. Keep in mind that if you’re applying to Wharton, you’d get an interview from a Wharton alum.

There might not be anyone in the area who volunteered who was a SAS alum.

^ That’s false. Penn tries to match you with someone that attended the school you applied for at Penn, but if the available alumni in the area attend another school, so be it. My interviewer went to CAS and I applied for Wharton.

Oh then darn. I don’t know then :(

I’m from Montana. My e-mail said that because there’s nobody in my area, they matched me with someone in New York.

From what I heard, I THINK they try to get everyone who applied ED an interview. This isn’t necessarily true for RD applicants though

^ Not true for ED applicants, either. Many ED applicants–including many who are accepted–are never interviewed.

FWIW, the Penn alumni association (which conducts the interviews) recently announced plans to begin interviewing all applicants by 2015 (via Skype, etc., if not in person).

My D interviewed with a medical doctor and she is applying to Wharton.

Interestingly, she interviewed for another school and the alumnus she interviewed with was also a Wharton MBA alumnus.
