No interviewers on Long Island?!?!

I just got an e-mail. Very strange. It reads:

"Adam,

We are glad to have received your request for an interview. Unfortunately, we do not have any alumni interviewers available within 75 miles of your home, and unfortunately we are unable to schedule an alumni interview for you. Please bear in mind that an interview is not a required part of the application process at Chicago. The interview is meant as an exchange of information, mainly for you to find out more about The University of Chicago.

You are also welcome to contact our office or your regional admissions counselor with any questions that you might have about the college. Please remember that while your completed application should provide us with a vivid enough portrait to make a sound decision, we invite you to append materials that might help us understand any special talents, qualities, or circumstances that the application does not permit you to highlight. I assure you that all such materials will be carefully considered.

I regret that we are not able to offer you a personal interview in your community. Let me reiterate, if you have any questions about the College, or would like to arrange an interview outside of your area, please feel free to contact us at asc-questions@phoenix.uchicago.edu.

Now I live on the South Shore of Nassau County, LI. No alumni interviewers within 75 miles of me means there are no U of Chicago alumni who do interviews in Long Island, New York City, Northern Jersey, Westchester County, the beginnings of upstate New York, or Southern Connecticut. I'd think this is the region where more alumni go than anywhere else! (Save, maybe, Chicago :p) Have any other LIers/NYCers gotten similar e-mails when requesting interviews?

wow that is very strange, I live on long island as well, and I am going to submit my application in the next 2 days, so I will let you know what happens.

Perhaps you could inquire by e-mail where the "closest" interviewers would be for you? Possibly, they do have interviewers but these are fully booked for the next few months? I do know that at some schools, if you send in your app close to the deadline, they may have trouble scheduling you. I have no idea, however, if that's true of Chicago. (Our son did an on-campus interview.)

I got that too. I called and asked as well. I'm going to tell them I'll come to Chicago for an interview. I really like the school and I hope that'll show my genuine interest to boot.

I know one U Chicago alum who teaches in the English Dept. at Rutgers (NJ).

Interviews are not all that important at Chicago. Many are admitted without one, including my S.

I got this too, but in Minnesota.

I got that same e-mail, but I live is Miami, FL.

In any case, you shouldn't worry about it. From what I hear (UCHicago itself admits this) the interview really doesn't matter much is the application process. I got in fine without it. So I think its fine.

I also live on Long Island and I got the same e-mail two days ago. How else should I try to show interest?

Don't worry about it if you can't get an interview. holyspirit-It might be hard to get an on campus interview if you haven't yet scheduled it so get scheduling!

One can show interests in one' essays. By trying to schedule an interview, one has shown interest.

I'm an LIer. I got in EA, but I had to go to the actual campus for the interview, which was fine, since it's nice to visit anyway.

i live about 15 min from D.C. (as in our nation's capital) and they wanted to send me to someone in Pennsylvania some 2 to 3 hours away... it was lovely... im still trying to get a hold of them
