No Language Junior/Senior Year?

Hi, I’m a high school sophomore that’s currently taking French IV Honors. I love language and find picking a new one up relatively easy, which is why I’m currently in a level 4 class. My school doesn’t offer AP language courses and thus majority students take a level 2 language class sophomore year (those that took Spanish, though, could be in Spanish III in sophomore year) So, I’m ahead in language relative to the rest of my school. There’s no class for me to take next year or senior year. So, I was wondering if anybody had an idea of what to do.

I was thinking I could self-study AP French or do an independent study with my teacher if she has time. I could also take Dual Enrollment french which I did freshman year (I took Elementary I and II), but I feel l might be behind because I didn’t take dual enrollment for a year. Or, would colleges mind not seeing a language the last two years since they know I made it to the highest level offered?

I suggest you talk to the dual enrollment French teacher regarding whether you really WILL be behind, if you take it next year. Take a look at the text book for that class to see if it really is “over your head”.
If it isnt, then take the course if it can fit into your schedule.

Bottom line, selective colleges will want to see “proof” that you are fluent and have taken the most advanced level FL available to you.
So be sure you take the SAT French language [ non listening] subject test at the end of this school year.
A high [700+] score should be proof enough for them that you are as fluent in French as students who have taken 4 years of classes. If you score less than that you may want to take the dual enrollment class or self study for the AP class and take the test again afterward.

Most colleges are happy that you got to the 4th level of French. Do you plan on doing anything with languages in College? If no, then don’t sweat it too much. If yes, then talk to your GC about options that you could be successful in.
