If you don't have a laptop or computer at UCSD, is it a major problem?

like can you go to the library or some computer lab where they have computers available for everyone to use for free?

You'll be fine. There are computers everywhere; libraries, computer labs, lounges, etc.

I think it all boils down to convenience. If you're OK with having to go to the libraries for working on a computer, then you don't need a computer. Personally, I'd die without my laptop. But that's just crazy ol' me.

it's a million times more convenient to have your own laptop/computer handy. especially if you have a paper to write that happens to be due the next day.

consider looking through ads in the newspapers around this time. you can score a nice laptop sometimes for cheap. i got mine for $600. it's an hp and it's lasted 2 years so far with no problems (other than the crappy keyboard).

You can get a linux MSI Wind for $399.

But it's not a major problem if you have no computer.

come midterms and finals week, it will be VERY VERY difficult scoring a free computer in the library. people even camp out at computer workstations with their personal laptops -- the reasoning being they can research on one screen, type with the other. if you told them your predicament and requested to use the computer, they'd probably tell you to scram.

my advice: buy one. even if it's a crappy one that's fine -- word processor + internet + printing capabilities are all you need.

why do people need computers during finals week? can't you just study from the textbook? is clueless about finals

the reason i dont want a computer is because i know i'll waste a ton of time going online.

for many classes, professors will post practice exams/solutions/etc to the class website, email out last-minute announcements, students and TAs can post questions and answers on discussion forums, stuff like that.

i'll be frank -- i've never known ANYONE to get through college without a computer of their own. i don't think it's a good idea at all.

but couldn't i just go to the library everyday and check my email and my professors pages?

sorry if im being difficult but i really really dont want to get a computer unless it is absolutely essential, like unless i will definitely fail the class unless i have a computer

well, in this day and age you can order a computer and have it delivered to you within a week. if you're so keen to try this out (and i'm curious to see if you actually make it through all four years without one), just go ahead and see how long you last!

I survived a month in the winter with no computer. Then I caved and bought an EEE pc.

why would you not want a personal computer???

you can try...

and if you're seriously going this route, you should make some friends to mooch the computer every once in a while for email + word processing. don't forget to pay them for printer ink money.

or if your whole purpose is to minimize distractions...well good luck. college is about distractions so unless you can lock yourself up in the room 24/7 with blank white walls and no computer...you'd be an extremely bitter and sad person, but good luck with that.

You can probably build a sufficient computer for less than $100 if you're not going to use it to do anything besides studying.

its not about money

my parents want to buy me a laptop but i dont want one

ok i guess im sounding really weird, like 'how can you NOT want a computer, are you crazy?'

but i just want to see if I can
and i honestly think it would hinder me more than it would help me

i doubt i'd have very many distractions other than a computer. im not that social so i'll probably just be sitting in the library reading books or something
haha i sound so boring

It makes sense, but at least have a desktop computer ready so you don't have to go to the library everytime you want to do something. They're equally distracting if you ask me.

I agree. I think the benefits of being able to do your work where/when you want outweigh the cost of potential distractions.
