My son has taken all the math his school has to offer (through AP Calc AB) they do not have AP Calc BC or AP Stat. He really does not want to take an online class, and due to extracurriculars will not be able to take a cc class. He has no plans to go into a stem field. Should he add an extra science AP. Is this ok for top ranked schools? He is in the top 5% of his class, with a 2290 SAT score.
Schools look at the application in the context of his school. If he has exhausted the math curriculum, that won’t be held against him.
Is there a nearby college or community college he can take math?
Colleges take into account the classes available for students to take at their high schools. Not all colleges have all types of classes available, so your son’s circumstances won’t hurt him.
If he doesn’t want to go into the STEM field and has already taken the highest math class possible, he could use the extra time to pursue something he is passionate about, because schools look for that. He has a considerably high SAT, so he should be fine.
Thank you! Community College wouldn’t work because of his extracurricular activities. He is signed up for an extra science AP.
It should be fine. Colleges will understand your son’s situation.
If he has no plans to go into a STEM field, perhaps an AP class like AP Econ, AP Government, AP English, AP Foreign Language, or AP History would work better than a science AP? I would suggest your son to take an AP course somewhat related to his field of study, as science doesn’t have too much to do with his future plans.
He will be taking AP Eng, AP Gov/Econ, AP Physics, and tossing in AP Environmental Sci. That is everything available to his grade level. Just to be competitive for top schools, he was worried about not having a 12th grade math class.
Thanks
Your son’s HS is similar to mine. My school does not offer AP Calc BC only AB. There are a couple kids I know who took AP Calc AB junior year and so they aren’t any math class they can take senior year. Many of them will go to a local university to take Calc 2 or Multivariate Calculus or Statistics.
Don’t worry. My daughter was in the same position. She super-accelerated math starting in 5th grade, and took no math senior year. She just graduated from Yale in STEM
Our school has no AP math at all…my oldest two are now enrolled at Cornell, one in the College of Engineering. Just echoing what other have said .
donnaleighg and mdcmom - that’s so good to know! Thank you
