So last year, there was a two-hour timed essay writing competition to determine who got Medalist (full in-state tuition) and Presidential (full ride) scholarships. This year based off the letter I got about the Honors program and this link about the Honors Online Scholarship Application: [Honors Online Scholarship Application (HOSA)](http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/HOSA/) It looks like there will not be a Maximus Competition this year and the awarding of Medalist and Presidential scholarships will be based of HOSA application essays instead.

Am I correct? Or did I miss something where it said that there would be a competition again this year?

Browniez…According to the HOSA application;

“Through the HOSA review process, approximately 60 applicants will be named as finalists for the Presidential Scholarship. Finalists will be invited to attend Scholarship Interview Weekend on Sunday-Monday, February 27-28, 2011. Invitations to partcipate in Scholarship Interview Weekend will be extended to the finalists in mid-February. Following the interviews, up to 15 individuals will be awarded the Presidential Scholarship and membership in the Honors Collegium.”

Regarding the Medalist;

“Applicants named as finalists for the Presidential Scholarship are also in strong contention for the Medalist Scholarship. Further, applicants with excellent HOSAs, who are not Presidential Scholarship finalists, will be carefully considered for the Medalist Scholarship. Approximately 45 individuals will be awarded the Medalist Scholarship.”

D1 sent her HOSA in shortly after being accepted. Haven’t heard anything back yet regarding further status. Hope this helps.

^ Also, D1 got a scholarship letter in the mail a few days ago saying she was awarded the Maximus ($3K per year) and the Buckeye Nat’l ($8.7K per year) scholarships. It’s a nice start, but still a long way from making OSU affordable for an OOS student. Hoping there’s more to come!!

Very confused parent. My daughter also received a Maximus Scholarship today. What happened to the competition?

goosemay…If you’re talking about the Presidential and Medalist scholarship competition, it hasn’t begun yet. Invitations to compete for these scholarships won’t be sent out until mid-February. Not sure if there is a seperate Medalist competition, or if those scholarships go to students who don’t quite make the cutoff for Presidential and those finalists for Presidential who don’t get selected. In any case, there is no competition for Maximus scholarships. They are awarded based strictly on merit from your OSU application.

Yes, but in the past if you received the Maximus scholarship award money, you were also invited to a competition for a full scholarship. I think the OP is right that this year the university decided to eliminate this competition and provide a flat $3000 to Maximus scholarship winners. To receive a full scholarship, however, you can complete the HOSA application, as Wolverine 86 said.

DS received Maximus Scholarship, and has submitted his HOSA application. Can someone please explain what is involved in the competition for Presidential and Medalist scholarships? Has anyone been through this process? I’m imagining the students go through a series of interviews. Is anything else involved, such as more essay writing?

You indicate you already received a scholarship. We are in a holding pattern needing to decide if we should move on to our second or third choice (have had their scholarship offers for 30+ days). I was under the impression that scholarship letters don’t come out until after 3/1. Should I assume we may not be offered one, or perhaps they are still evaluating him despite his acceptance in November? He completed the HOSA application and I can’t imagine he will be considered for anything there. He is a 32 act, great gpa and honors courses in a class of 1,000 but there will be plenty of higher scoring applicants. I am hoping for the Buckeye & Maximus or we must remove this school from the list. Any opinions as to why some have received letters and we have not?

Check out this link and click on Maximus and Provost scholarships. Depending on your son’s rank, his ACT makes him eligible for one of these. I would give them a call.

And if his rank is not quite there, but he’s in a huge, competitive high school, you might even call and ask them to look at that. I know for the Honors Program they said they are not strict about the rank requirement if your class is is very large or very competitive

He’s definately “eligible” but that doesnt mean he will be awarded. I’m just confused why some students have offers and we don’t and I’m thinking they do this in waves, and we just didnt make the first “cut”. Our school doesnt rank. Informally, I know he’s in the top 5%, and could get a counselor to provide that information to OSU but they never asked. I think I will call the scholarship office and ask what their method is and why some have been notified and some not. We really need to move on if the offer we expect won’t be there.
