No mention of NM scholarship anywhere

Son was accepted, he is a national merit finalist and selected USC as his first choice for national merit. There is no mention of him receiving the NM Presidential Scholarship anywhere in the acceptance packet nor online. Does this come later or is it an oversight? It feels so, strange that it's not mentioned.

Same here. Getting a little worried as I didn’t submit FAFSA as I was under the impression that it was not needed to receive the NMF Scholarship.

FAFSA should not be needed for that since NM is merit -based, not need -based. This scholarship should feel like an honor, and so far it doesn’t.

I haven’t even looked at S2’s Financial aid statement yet for this very reason. Relax. These are preliminary figures. I think you have until the end of April to change your 1st choice selection with the NMS foundation. So I don’t think the awards will be updated until after that date and/or you committ to USC. Relax-- if you’re a NMF and you have USC listed as your top choice, you get it. FIGHT ON!!!

No FAFSA is needed to get the automatic NMF Presidential Scholarship. You should receive something in the mail. Be sure you have listed USC as #1 with NM.

I am also concerned that I have not received any information on 1/2 tution fee waiver. A friend of mine called the USC office and the person who answered the phone at USC informed my friend that it is not a guarantee that NMF will receive 1/2 tution fee waiver. I am confused and worried.
Does anyone know that last year when did they inform NMF about the 1/2 tution fee waiver.

A friend of mine also called office and they said it wasn’t a guarantee that NMFs receives presidential scholarships. Have they always said this in previous years?

In the “no scholarship” letter they sent out a couple months ago, it basically states that NMFs are guaranteed presidential scholarships.

Don’t worry! Yes, USC give the Presidential scholarship to all NMF who name USC as their #1. It has been suggested that you scan and email your finalist letter, but even if you don’t do that, USC will get your name from the NM Foundation and you will receive a letter in the mail with a form to sign formally accepting the scholarship. Congrats!

after accepting enrollment at USC , you will receive notice of the 1/2 tuition deduction some time in July in the Burser’s statement. The $500 / semester award deduction from NMF often appears later, sometimes after the Semester has started.
as other veterans above have stated- be sure that you notify NMSF that USC is your final first choice school in writing. This can be done in early May, after the admission decision is made.

This past Friday my son received a letter from Kirk Brennan congratulating him on being a NMF & an offer to accept USC’s Presidential NMF Scholarship. Included was an acceptance form for my S to sign and return by 5.1.12.

In the years I’ve followed USC admissions on CC, every single NMF who lists USC as 1st choice automatically received the Presidential NMF scholarship of 1/2 tuition for 4 years–which shows up on your tuition statement. If suspicious info is told over the phone by someone (perhaps a student) working in the FinAid office, you should ask to speak to a FinAid officer or other full-time staff person.

USC’s NMF Presidential award is a very generous prize for kids who did great taking one test during junior year. Even better, you’ve been admitted to USC, which is not the case for every NMF. It means you had, in their opinion, the whole package! For those families looking for large merit $$ and want to attend an excellent private university, USC is one of the few who give such awards.

Congratulations!

@DadinNeb: Congrats! Did you ever notify USC of your son’s NMF status, i.e. faxing/scanning the letter?

Not to SC, only to NMSC. We did that @ the end of Feb.

You mean the NMS sent letter to your son by mail to confirm the President award?

I called NMS, they said, they already sent the notice to USC begin last month.
The USC will send the notice back to NMS about they will give award for that student.
Then NMS will sent out the notice to Student begin April 25th until the end May if
the student get select the president award.

Actually, the letter my S received was dated March 26 and it was from Dean Brennan.

The first line reads, “Congratulations! I am delighted to tell you that you have been selected as a Presidential Scholar at the University of Southern California.”

This is the automatic NMF, as the son was not invited to interview for any scholarship. Included in Dean Brennan’s letter was the 2012-2013 USC Scholarship Acknowledgment form; which is to be returned by May 1 along w/his enrollment deposit check for $300.

Hmm interesting. Was your son an early admit? I hope our NMF letters come soon – that’s all I’m waiting for before I commit to USC. Thanks!

He was an early admit, in January.

how was he an early admit and didn’t receive an interview invitation?

Every year some students are admitted early and do not receive interview invites, but will end up getting the NMF Presidential. They are usually very well qualified students who USC wants to admit early.

The NMF Presidential is a USC scholarship-- not NM. The letter will come from USC as DadInNeb has said, not NM.

NM will send a letter about the $1000 NMS USC scholarship (this will also be in the letter from USC) at some point as well (you will need to send/fax a form back to them as well).

D was also an early admit and selected USC #1 very early in the process. Her letter from USC about the NMF Presidential and NMS $1000 and other merit awards arrived in early April last year.

Yes, we also waited until we had it all in writing before D committed too.

Not sure what happens if you haven’t selected USC to NM yet, and how it would affect the notification process.
