So I stumbled upon an article from a few days ago that mentioned FAFSA is doing away with the ACG this year (which was about $750 for me this past school year, and I read it could be up to $1300 sophomore year, which will be the year i'm entering) is this true? Can't seem to find any more info about it...

Yes, the ACG and SMART programs were only funded through the current school year and were not renewed. The Pell was increased instead and, of course, the year round Pell was added. But the year round Pell is also in danger of being cut in next year’s budget as there’s not enough money to pay for it.

* FAFSA is doing away with the ACG this year *

FAFSA is just an application. It isn’t “doing away” with anything. the federal gov’t decided to no longer fund ACG.

^ Right… I’m not knowledgeable enough about the whole financial aid thing to use precise terminology here… regardless, I think i’m one of the few kids out of my friends that actually knows how to fill out the FAFSA myself. Anyway, thanks.

I knew what you meant anyway;) Str, you might want to follow the news on Pell funding for next year as the next thread on this forum discusses. I know it’s going to be very hard for some kids to suddenly lose both ACG/SMART and have ther Pell grants cut. Good luck!

You might ask your school if they’re going to cover the loss of that grant in any way. If they aren’t able to do so, then you may need to prepare for the loss by working over the summer and setting aside some savings.

I’m sure I’ll have a few questions for the financial aid office, but I have some money saved up, and I already plan on working extensively (40+ hours/week ideally) over the summer. Not to mention there’s a chance I may end up commuting which, despite the inconvenience, would save a good amount of $$$. Though best case scenario I get a cheap place off-campus… we’ll see.
