The somewhat controversial slogan, "An Army of One" has been quietly ditched by the Pentagon. It is replaced by "Army Strong." Not sure what that means but an online poll had the overwhelming favorite that old standby "Be all that you can be." Must be 80's nostalgia. :D What do you think? I remember reading in "Absolutely American" that the cadets at West Point didn't like the Army of one motto.

My husband, an Army veteran from the 80's, thinks the "Army of One" slogan was the stupidest idea ever. I still don't understand why they got rid of "Be all you can be"...it is simple, to the point and appropriate for the Army.

well, one of anything never beat a lot of something. And if I were out there in the trenches, I would hate to think I am the only ONE!

Forget "Army Strong"....??????

"Accelerate your life"...now we're talking! Simply brilliant! ;)

I hope that's not the new slogan.

Has it become "hey, we've lowered our standards" :)

Sorry just a news report this morning about how many recruits would not have been accepted under old standards that were this year.

There are a couple of alternatives, Opie.

Open the restricted combat arms branches to women

Reinstate the draft

Re-assign personnel from other branches (air force, navy, etc) to the army, give 'em a pair of boots and teach 'em to shoot.

Frankly, many of our conflicts have been fought with soldiers, sailors, and Marines that would not have passed even today's enlistment requirements. Unless the American public and politicians are willing to "cowboy up" and face the realities of todays combat realities in a modern world (where troop numbers are still critical), none of the above 3 will occur and we are left with the current situation.

I'd say the smartest choice would be to open up combat arms to women. The other two could cause some big problems. (at least bigger than opening up combat arms to women)

"There are a couple of alternatives, Opie."

You forgot one... change the administration. :)

Opie,
Regardless of what you think of the current administration the reality is that the army as it is now is under-strength given the demands that are (and could be) put upon it. If it wasn't Iraq, it would be somewhere else at some other time, but the reality would still be just as stark. The arguments about "why" are really a separate issue. I would concur with Ironjohn that the most logical solution short of the draft is assigning women to combat arms.

Sorry I'm just not having a serious day today. Yes the army is understrength, yes we are being led by the 21st century's version of the French WW1 aristocrats so many people are chosing not to serve because of this administration and the cavalier attitude towards the foot soldier.

Saw the Army Strong videos at AUSA today and they are really good. Very HOOAH!

You need boots on the ground to occupy and control cities, towns, and villages. There is not enough money being allocated to pay for the infantry troops, infantry related supplies, and infantry related technology necessary for the safe and effective long term occupation of enemy territory.

LFWB dad:
Saw the video for the first time today, I agree---very powerful and a good message.

Not to be sexist, but have you noticed the subliminal message in that for women?

Hmmm...not really................what do you think that message was? I saw women in the video, I saw men.

I think the video is really well done. Much better motto than the last one haha. SteslaS, I'm having a hard time seeing this subliminal message in the video dealing with women. Enlighten us.

Well you see they are targeting women. I mean you have to look closely. I can't explain myself that well.

I'm still not seeing that. Could you narrow it down to a couple clips?

After seeing the video, I like the new slogan, but I feel they could have pushed it just a bit further. It had potential for more emotional/powerful moments, but it'll do I guess.

Oh and about more money for soldiers, I think the army gets enough! The Marines really need more dough because they have a lot of families living under the POVERTY LEVEL. That is completly unacceptable. I read there are going to be pay raises military-wide this upcoming year, so yay.
