DS is a continuing student and we received this newsletter from his school about financial aid. It says: "You do not need to submit a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE application if you have
submitted one in the past.". We submitted one last year and I was under the impression that the CSS profile was required every year. We already submitted one for 2012-13 in late December 2011 with estimated numbers. I was about to send them the corrected profile and now I am not sure what to do.

Our son went to Boston University. At the time of his admission…ALL freshmen were required to submit both the FAFSA and Profile for ALL aid, including all merit aid. We did so. This was also required when he was a returning student his sophomore year. We did both then too.

We got a notification in the winter of his sophomore year that we did NOT have to complete the Profile for continuation of his merit award unless our circumstances changed. BUT we did have to complete the FAFSA for the Stafford loan. So…we got that year off. woohoo. BUT our “circumstances changed” for his senior year when his sister was a college freshmen.

I would suggest you call the financial aid office just to confirm this. Maybe they just use the FAFSA for continuing students (that has your income and assets on it…if no other circumstances have changed, maybe that’s enough).
