No new undergrads @ Porter for Fall 2010-11?

I filled out my SIR to attend UCSC in the Fall and I put my college preferences in order- with Porter at #1, but I also noticed that there was a notice saying that no new undergrads can go to Porter? Does anyone have ANY info. about this??! It would be greatly appreciated!

i don’t know but it was either porter or kresge. one of the college students is for TRANSFER students only. don’t remember which but i do think it’s porter

Ah, yeah I do think that it’s Porter. Ugh. Too bad because I put that as my number 1… Do you think that will mess up my order of colleges (meaning will it mess up where I chose to be 2nd?)

What?! Really?! Porter was my high number 1 choice ; ;

I know it was mine too. But I picked Kresge 2nd, so if that was your second then you will most likely end up there, (as with me). It is slightly disappointing… but hey. They gotta do what they gotta do I guess. Kresge is cool.

On the Porter website they hint that both freshman and transfers will be admitted to Porter… : / I’m going to try calling tomorrow; I’m not sure if they’re open, but I really want to find out…

I wouldn’t have a problem with being in Kresge, but they’re all apartments and I kind of wanted to live in a ‘normal’ dorm my first year : /… a quad, at that. Cause they’re so much cheaper than doubles.

@inthemorning, let us know if you find out anything.

I am a transfer who was hoping to be affiliated with Porter as well. It was bittersweet to get my acceptance and then realize that I couldn’t be in Porter–mostly all of my friends at the school are in Porter and I was hoping to be with them.

However–Kresge is right next to Porter. Yes, we’ll have to take different Core classes–but that’s okay.

ALSO: All transfer students (regardless of college affiliation) planning to live ON CAMPUS will reside in the Transfer Community–which is IN Porter College. They’re brand new dorms that I believe are actually still being built!

The way I see it–this could actually be beneficial for a transfer student in Kresge. This is because we’ll HAVE to live in Porter for our first year, which has dorm-style housing. Then, our second year, we’ll get to live in the Kresge apartments as seniors (if you do choose to live on campus for the second year). I actually think this is a decent route to take.

Hey guys, I e-mailed the Porter Housing Provist yesterday asking about the whole ordeal so if I find anything out I will post it on this thread. And if anyone else finds anything out do the same! Because I know that many people have/will choose Porter as their #1 college preference.

Bananananannanananananslug: It’s not that NO new undergrads can be in Porter–only the transfer students. Are you a transfer student???

@AGR1010… I am going to be a freshman and am attending in the fall. Ugh… so no freshman will be accepted at Porter, like, for sure? That is such a disappointment :/.

It seems they’re closed on Saturdays… : / I sent an e-mail to the provost as well. I honestly don’t know what to put as my first choice, now.

@inthemorning… Well, I wish you luck! I put Porter as my first yesterday despite being unsure as of whether I would get it or not. But Kresge was my 2nd, and it is like Porter, but yeah I don’t know If I would really like to live in an apartment and whatnot. I think that Kresge is the next best thing to Porter, but to each his or her own.

: ) Maybe I’ll try for kresge, if things have to work out this way. I really wish Kresge had dorm styled housing and not just apts.

Just look into it more, and try to make the best decision possible for yourself. It will all work out :)

Guys, I’m pretty sure they are accepting frosh.

From what I’ve heard (and yeah, I’m at Porter), they are going to have a transfer students HALL. They can’t possibly fill up a whole building with transfers. At the moment, there is only one building (B building, which is where we all live right now), but the A building is being rebuilt and should be done by fall.

So not only will there still be the B building (which at the moment isn’t even full), but there will be a whole new building. I’m almost 100% sure they will accept new frosh for the fall.

Banananaslug: You misread what I’m saying. Freshman can be in Porter–it’s the transfer students that can’t.

If you’re a freshman, you CAN be in Porter. I, unfortunately, cannot.

@rectangleshorts Well that makes me feel a ton better! Because I was really looking forward to either being at Porter or Kresge.

@AGR1010: I see what you’re saying now. Thanks for the info!

From the e-mail I got back today : )

“Hi Carrie, Porter is scheduled to accept hundreds of new frosh for next year. Our expanded dorm capacity will allow us to accommodate a larger frosh class than before AND some transfer students. best wishes, David”

So relieved.
