Just informed by UF that they will not have on campus housing for Spring 2012 admissions. Seems they have a backlog of fall admits who were forced to room with the resident advisors on their floors. Now I have to scramble and find a place to live off campus. UF housing painted a rosier picture back in February when I was admitted.
If I wanted to be a commuter student I would have stayed at my local university. Prospective applicants should keep this in mind. Spring admits are clearly on the "back of the bus".

Did you send in your housing deposit right away? How long ago did you apply?

I hope this is what you’re talking about. I got this message an hour ago.

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/9938/nooooooofuuf.png

If this is it, I am in the same boat as you are. I sent a message to be placed in the waiting list, but I highly doubt I will get a dorm. I’m really starting to hate being a future spring freshy. Getting placed for spring first of all, and now being rejected housing. :/

Time to start searching for an apt. bahhh

I applied as soon as they started accepting the $25 deposits either August or September of last year so that wasn’t it. The person I spoke to at Housing explained that they admitted too many students and that they have a back log of fall students still waiting to be placed. Had I been told of this possibility in February I may have chosen a different school. I turned down several attractive offers to be a Gator and all they have done is make me feel like a second class citizen. I imagine Spring admits will also be low man on the totem poll when it comes to registering for Spring semester classes.

ohhhh. That’s too bad Gables. I’d have hated my son to have to live off campus in his freshman year. That probably would have been a deal breaker.

Setback maybe but certainly not a deal breaker!

gables79 why dont you try to look at next year as your freshman year and live in the dorm next year. I know it is not perfect. But believe even living off campus is 1000x better than commuting to UM which I assume is the other school you are referring to.

There are some apartments close to campus. Right across the street from Tigert Hall very close to 90% of the freshmen classes.

I dont know the names but someone on here should know.

@gator4ever:

That would be a great idea EXCEPT they said we would have to apply again for next year with no apparent consideration for being left out this year. I do not know if UF gives preferences to sophomores over freshman when it comes to housing. Perhaps someone here could elaborate.

UM, FSU and a couple of Northeastern schools were strong contenders. Cost did not factor heavily in the decision. Wanted to be Gator. May still become one. Gotta give this one some time to look over, but right now not feeling it. I think they acted irresponsibly by taking in so many housing deposits when they should have known well before March or April that they would not have spaces for everyone. I have heard unfavorable comments regarding large class sizes for some first and second year courses. Clearing overcrowding in an issue at UF.

Er… thats weird. I was accepted for Spring 2012 and no one mentioned that to me :(

This doesn’t really surprise me as they definitely overbooked housing this semester. They tried offering discounted contract cancellations and when that didn’t work they offered full refunds. That still did not result in enough cancellations and as a result they were sending people over to Oakbrook Walk, in addition to rooming them with RAs.

They accepted me for housing and I’m a Spring 2012 Freshman. Where did you get this info?

EDit:
I just talked to my dad about it. I have a letter and an email guaranteeing me on-campus housing and I even chose my 3 options for dorm areas a week ago.

Got the email to complete my contract on September 22nd.

I am deeply sorry to you both who weren’t able to get it. It was just chance I guess?

Dude- -
I live off of SW 56 Street and east of 57 Avenue and obviously I can
walk to UM, but I rather live off campus in Gainesville and commute
for a semester than attend UM ! Good Luck

Take it as a good thing. I hate the dorms here with a fiery passion and will most definitely be living off-campus next year.

As a current student living in Jennings I can personally tell you that on-campus living is overrated. It’s true that it’s great for meeting new people, but there are plenty of apartments(for example The Courtyards) that are just as close(or closer; I’m talking to you Springs) to your classes as many of the dorms and you will meet people as long as you get involved. Also a major setback is all the rules of living in a dorm, my experience with my RA hasn’t been positive and if you really want freedom an apartment is the best option. Thanks to the overcrowding problem that is keeping you out of housing, UF is letting us break our contracts and I plan on moving into my fraternity house in the Spring.

Like I said before, I’m a 2012 Spring Freshman. Just got assigned a dorm. Beaty! :D

Hey guys. I’m a freshman at UF and I didn’t get housing last year. I ended up moving into an off-campus apartment/dorm that’s walking distance to UF. Some kid on my floor moved out and I know there’s an open spot. It’s called Windsor Hall if anyone wants to look into it! It’s very affordable and a great alternative to on-campus housing.

If you don’t want to go the apartment route, you could try renting a condo or home. [Gainesville FL Rentals, Gainesville Rental Search, Condos for Rent, Homes for Rent](http://www.allisonables.com/gainesville-rentals/)

In anyone still needs housing, we might have a room in our dorm in Beaty!

We might have an open space available after, hopefully, the new room mate leaves (long story) so don’t fret! There are vacancies all across campus as well!

And yes sophomores get first pick over freshmen when it comes to next year’s housing.
