Hey guys! I am a sophomore transfer, who has recently started to register for classes.

I know I am registering somewhat late and should not expect too many open spots, but I am having a very hard time finding any classes to take. It was bad enough that only half of my credits transferred, but it seems that I won't even by able to get 15 credits worth of classes this semester.

Are there any tips/advice for finding open classes? Everything I search for seems to be either full, even the very late classes. Will UNC possibly open up more classes soon?

Don’t worry about it. You can sit on the classes you hope to be enrolled in. The professor will usually take roll call and then ask for an other students they haven’t called. Students also drop classes within the first few weeks.

I just went on ConnectCarolina and did a search on Engl 105 and saw three open class times (9:45, 11:30 and 1:15), I Did the same for LFIT and saw open classes for 103, 104, 106, 110, 113 and 115. Make sure you have the “show only open classes” check box clicked in the class search criteria.

Also, since you are mostly looking at the same type of classes a first year would take, be aware that UNC reserves a number of those class slots for first year orientation (which runs from July 8-31). They will release all remaining slots after that period.

There is also a great deal of churn when the wait-lists are purged and the first two weeks in Aug when everyone is making last minute changes to finalize their schedule.

As smogintheloo indicated, as a last resort, show up to the first day of class and after the class, politely approach the professor about being added. Many are nice enough to do so. I did exactly that for Span 203 in my first year / first semester.

Thank you very much for the information! I actually ended up finding some LFIT classes without any difficulty and an ENGL 105. I have a decent number of courses added now, but I am still hoping for some spots to open in classes needed as pre-reqs for Kenan-Flagler.

I might also consider the ‘show up and ask’ approach if needed. Although at this point, I think I have all the classes that I need.
