I'm going to declare a major in applied math and maybe I will end up with a NP in math 55. I'm a transfer student in this fall so math 55 is not a required class for me. If unfortunately I get a NP in math 55, does that look really bad on my transcript if I consider going to a graduate school?

If you want to go to math graduate school, you should have plenty of A’s in upper level coursework. If you have these and have a good explanation for your 55 result, then I think you should not worry too much. Be advised that people without C’s, but plenty of B’s plus few A’s and a mediocre GRE in math can get straight rejections from all the schools they apply to for math graduate school. It can be a rough world.

Be sure you have strong coursework in the areas of math that you think will most likely carry over into your research interests for graduate school.

So does that NP look really terrible on my transcript? I know it doesn’t look good, but would grad schools reject me without thinking when they see the NP?
