No prerequisite classes at CC

How am I supposed to complete prerequisite courses prior to transfer if there are only one or two courses available at my school for my intended major? Does that effect my chances of getting accepted drastically?

yes it well, your going to have to look around for other nearby CC’s to find some that offer those courses…
because without complete those courses you wont be nearly as competitive as others who apply and have more pre reqs done

Whoa! Don’t listen to BigDreamsKid! That person is bound to cause nightmares…first of all, depending on what you want to do or where you want to go matters the most. What state are you in? Are you planning on staying local or transfer to a school out of state? Furthermore, if you are going to a CC and that district does not offer the classes it is not your fault. This means it is well known (or will be when you apply) that you did not complete certain courses because they were not offered.

I am not speaking from opinion but from experience. I was in San Diego and was taking courses to transfer, some pre-req’s were not offered and I did not have to take them. I then moved to Berkeley and the cc here offered those courses. I had to take them…but if I would have stayed in San Diego not doing those courses would not have affected my chances of being accepted to the school of my choice.

Recently accepted to UC Davis.

i totally agree with @bigdreamskid. in fact, i suggest transferring to a CCC that offers all the prereqs that you need. or as bigdreams suggested, just find a CC that offers them. and move to a CCC that is close to the UC that you want to attend, location is also a factor for acceptance to UC schools. the closer you live the better.

i was recently accepted to all the schools i applied to. now attending UCB.
good luck! go bears!

My hope is to transfer from Golden West in huntington to UCLA and study Communications. According to Assist.org, Golden West offers all prerequisite classes besides 2. If i take all the support courses will that help my chances?

[ASSIST Report: GWC 11-12 UCLA Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=GWC&ria=UCLA&ia=GWC&oia=UCLA&aay=11-12&ay=11-12&dora=COM+STD)

Skeptic51 says he speaks from personal experience but then he says he went to a CC in Berkeley to take the courses… don’t listen to him.

The purpose of completing the majors pre reqs are to prepare you to get straight into your upper-division courses in your major. Although, you might not have to complete ALL of them to get admitted but they expect you to get as much as possible. The more you have done the higher chance you have in getting admitted.

Seems like Golden West College is going to benefit you the most so i would recommend you to take courses there!
Good Luck!

Just a note of caution, communication is one the toughest majors to transfer into UCLA, it has the lowest admit rate out of all the impacted majors.

Thank you for the optimism! I have 18 more units of my general IGETC left and plan on taking my prerequisite courses for my major along with some GE courses. I think I’m on a pretty good pace so far.

^ that’s the spirit, good luck!

If your CC doesn’t offer most of the prerequisite courses you need, the UC will let you take those prereqs there. I came to UC Davis as an animal science major without all my pre-reqs done (such as the introductory animal science courses) due to some of those courses not being offered at my CC (located in southern California and obviously far away from UCD) and I was able to take those pre-reqs here at UCD. Unless your school offers the equivalent, you don’t need to have all your pre-reqs done by the time you transfer.

I think it might vary from major to major but I got into Berkeley missing all my pre-requisites (English major) and on the update I just put that they weren’t offered at my community college.

@BigDreamsKid

Read my post.
If I would have stayed at SDCC I would not have had to take the LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY CLASS that WAS NOT OFFERED at SDCC. I could have still TAGed to Davis which is what my plan was. HOWEVER, because I moved into a NEW DISTRICT that OFFERED the course in question I had to take it. How does that not make since? In fact, Mattmay93 should go talk to an actual admissions counselor from his/her cc and UCLA instead of trying to get advice from people who dont have the actual FACTS. By the way, my major is communications.

TAG= obviously, though he would still be spending an extra year on campus= 3 years total.
-plus he never asked about tag
-you can’t say from experience since you didn’t get admitted WITHOUT THEM

^LAST PLUS- he wants to go to UCLA which doesn’t offer TAG… Usually UCLA requires most/if not all of major pre reqs finish

I REST MY CASE

^^HA! Right, he didn’t even mention what state he was in. You’re so smart. I got accepted to several schools. I TAGed to Davis to make sure I got in. I’m from LA and don’t want to go there. Pay attention. The actual question was, " How am I supposed to complete prerequisite courses prior to transfer if there are only one or two courses available at my school for my intended major? Does that effect my chances of getting accepted drastically?"

The answer is NO.

Hold up a sec… I’m about to tear you up.(SERIOUS FACE)
you said “he didn’t even mention what state he was in” – Ok so how can you assume he can TAG if that’s only for CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS…“You’re so smart”
You said “pay attention”… but clearly YOU are the one not paying attention.

PLUS, your circumstances do not apply for EVERYONE else. I was making general comments on GENERAL CC applicants. so yes i answered the question.
he then mentioned he was planing on applying to UCLA which are WAYY stricter on completing major pre reqs.

This thread was meant to help fellow CC transfer not misguide them!
ANY QUESTIONS?

Woah, I sense some hostility in this thread.

Aside from all of that, to answer OP’s question quick and simply put- If you plan on applying to an impacted major at a high tier UC, do whatever it takes in order to increase your chances of being admitted. No, they cannot necessarily hold it against you, but it could still look poorly against all of the other transfers who have a TAP/TAG. I applied to UCSC without having sever major prep courses completed (were not offered at my CC) and got admitted, but they admit by school and are not nearly as competitive as say, UCB or UCLA. Anyways, hope that answered your question to some degree. :)

I love people who think they have big balls on a monitor but forget to capitalize an “I” when they “tear” someone apart. Anyway, if the district you are in does not offer a certain class no school is going to disqualify you on the grounds of you not having completed prereq’s that aren’t possible to complete.

Edit your crap and answer the question. Read his first post, don’t assume I think TAG only works for certain “residents” and realize you were wrong from the beginning.

Again, if his school doesn’t offer those courses it will not DRASTICALLY (which is how he put it) affect his transfer chances. As for TAG, TAP or anything else, those are separate issues.

Anyone have a sewing needle? I’m really torn up right now…

oh, if you apply to an impacted major at UCLA they definitely want you to have ALL the prereqs completed. and be sure to apply to other UC schools as well, they are all great schools, and just make sure to have a backup. UCLA asked me for 3 prereqs for an impacted major and i had 6 (double) and was admitted. decided to attend UCB, but UCLA is a great school. good luck.

I go to GWC and got accepted into UCLA for astrophysics. im missing two astrophysics class (no CC offers them) and one physics lab class (also not offered). besides that i had IGETC and all the other pre-reqs.

I’m transferring from a CCC and applied to UCLA for Fall 2012 admission into an impacted major (or what I believe to be impacted… biochemistry). I was accepted with 2 prerequisites missing. My CCC does not offer those courses nor does any school within a 2-hour radius.
