Long story short...I'm applying Early Action to UConn, and everything has to be postmarked by December 1st. I asked a teacher I really thought I could trust for a recommendation about 3 weeks ago, and apparantly she "isn't finished" yet...in other words, she forgot all about it. I'm really doubting I'm going to have it by Friday.

UConn says its recommendations are "optional"...but I know it would look like I couldn't get a single teacher to say something good about me, which could kill me. I definitley have the grades for UConn (103/100 weighted GPA, 2150 SAT), and I've been told my essay is great, my ECs are probably slightly below average. I would still have a recommendation from my Guidance Counselor, just not a teacher.

Would I be okay without a teacher recommendation? I know it says their optional but it would look really suspicious if I didn't have one. Will my grades make up for the lack of a rec? I really don't know what to do...

I think since she remembers it now, she'll try to finish it. Also, supplements such as recs often get lost in the mail and colleges are unlikely to have the time to actually record every letter's postmark date (they have way better things to do.) I think you're ok if your teacher mails it out by this week. I mean, it's not your fault that she forgot.

Well...I guess I'm sorta at fault for waiting so long to check up on her. But my guidance counselor is also a failure, because every time I would ask him if she dropped it off at the guidance office, he just kept telling me "I'll check later".

So basically my future is in the hands of a bunch of incompetent slackers...

I definitely know that feeling. I want to add more schools to my list, but my teachers didn't understand the instructions to just drop a copy of the letter off in guidance so I can mail them out without having to go see them again. It just doesn't seem worth the trouble of bugging them all over again.

Dont fret..the colleges know that some stuff is out of your hands...they spend the next week or so just putting stuff in files, so a rec letter coming in a few days late from a teacher will not even be noticed, it will just get put in the file

I hope you guys are right. And I hope the teacher gets it done.

So if worst comes to worst...as in, the teacher doesn't get it done...what should I do? Apply EA without the recs, or wait for the recs and apply regular? What happens if I get everything but the rec there for the EA deadline, and then the rec later on...will they consider it?

Why don't you e-mail someone in admissions and ask? It will show that you have initiative. Just keep it brief and to the point. I bet this situation is very common.
