if you sent a letter to the admission officer but didn't get a reply

does that mean that you probably don't have a chance of getting in?

I would think that they would contact the people if they are interested, right?

I don't know.
I contacted my rep in January, after I was deferred, and she did email me back (I told her it might take awhile for me to type up an update, because I had the flu). However, I got no reply for any of the update emails I sent her.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. They probably received it, and, especially right now, are just too busy to email you back.

not that this makes you feel any better, but my friend sent a letter to the dean of admissions, who replied with a personal letter stating something along the lines of: "thank you for the letter, which I have included in your application folder. best of luck..." However, the friend does not have excellent stats, so it just may be the personality of your admissions officer. I know in my own experience that someone from Columbia and Yale would reply very quickly, while the one from Harvard still has not returned my email. Anyway, the response or lack thereof should not be indicative of your status in the admissions process.

I definitely think that it's the personality of the admissions officer. I have regularly emailed my regional representative - he is always really nice and helpful. Last night, for example, I emailed him at like midnight and about five minutes later, he replied with a personal message.

I'm sure if you sent a letter, though, and it was sent before the committee began discussing, then it's in your file. But, of course, this is a very uninformed guess from a fellow high school student. So who knows? Good luck.

I sent an email update, but got no response. I'm not too worried, though. kayrlis, i'm also from nj...which of the nj reps did you have that responded to you?

My rep was Liz. But she only responded to me once.
I called their office to find out which of the NJ reps was mine, left her a message, and she emailed me. I emailed her telling her I was really sick, and she responded. After that, she never emailed me back.

who's yours?

Well, I don't know for sure. I live in Central NJ (Hunterdon County) but this is what is listed on Yale's contact page for the two who cover NJ:

Elisabeth Kinsley
Alaska, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey (south and central), Oregon, Utah, Washington, Canada (Alberta, British Columbia)
203-432-9316
elisabeth.kinsley@yale.edu

Marcia Landesman
New Jersey (Montclair, Central NJ and Bergen County), New York (Long Island and Westchester)
203-432-9316
marcia.landesman@yale.edu

Both of them say central NJ. I figured that geographically speaking, I was probably covered by the second one. I sent her an email (not Liz), but I didn't hear back. Although, even if I did get the wrong one, I would be willing to bet that it would still end up in my file one way or another, or she probably would have at least emailed me saying that she wasnt my rep...or I would hope so at least. Anyway, I'm not too worried about it. I was only wondering who yours was since I got no response of any sort. Where in NJ are you? And also, do you think I probably guessed right with which rep I had?

I am smack dab in the middle of Jersey (monmouth county).
And the double-listing of Central Jersey is exactly why I called the Admissions Office.
You probably chose the right rep, because you are kind of the northern part of central NJ.
Even if you didn't, I agree completely that she would have put it in your file anyway. My rep seemed very nice and down-to-earth, and I'm sure this thing happens all the time with applicants from central Jersey.
I wouldn't be worried (and you're not)

When I was applying last year, I emailed my rep with a question that I considered important, and he never responded. I got in. Relax
