I'll be applying to SEAS '14. I haven't been involved in any type of lab research ever..and i was wondering if this would hurt my chances? Have most SEAS students done research while in highschool?

No most people who apply actually don’t really have research experience, it will not put you at a disadvantage as long as you have strong ECs in other fields.

We need a sticky with a thread titled:

“no [one particular EC]…a disadvantage?”

let’s be nice. It’s easy for us to laugh off that question because of course not many people don’t have research experience. But when you’re just starting out your college search you have no way to find out what the competition is like if you don’t ask around.

Really? Almost every accepted person I see in the decisions thread has done research! (sarcasm)

^Haha I know. All the people that posted I see had won International Science and Engineering Fair or Seimens (sarcasm)

I would say it depends on your intended major. If your major was English, obviously research will not matter as much. However, if you have a science major, research in that field would certainly help.

As far as disadvantage, in my opinion, you would be put at a disadvantage. But that depends on fellow applicants from the same school/area. (If everyone applying to Columbia from your region has research, ceteris paribus, the admission officer will certainly have a harder time arguing for you. Some people may disagree with this, but that is what I think.

You do have a way-- it’s the million chances threads that are posted here, plus the ED/RD results threads.

He’s a SEAS applicant. Try to be responsive to the question instead of saying what you would say.

The English language is in immense pain. You butchered it so badly with this sentence.

I know you wanted to impress us with your use of ceteris paribus, but it’s helpful to use the term ceteris paribus when it is actually likely that everything else is going to be the same.

Not the most persuasive argumentative technique.

well. now I see this was a stupid idea. haha. I was only worried because most of the people I know that got admitted DID have research…and um, yeah, definately not going to major in english…
