My son has been admitted to Comp. Science at UT Austin.
I learned from UT that no scholarships for CS major for Freshmen.
Later also most of the scholarships goes to Honors. My son is not interested in honors.
According to FAFSA our EFC is too high, actually we can NOT effort that much.

I am surprised that my son is not getting any scholarship or Financial aid from school which he wants to go. We have to pay whole tuition and Dorm fee.

Is it true or am i missing something?

Anybody in this situation? Any advice how to deal with this?

been there! Frustrating! Our EFC too high as well. Fortunately our daughter was a Nat’l Merit Finalist the very last year they gave the $3,000 for that…a bit of help. But she did move into the honors program sophomore year (engineering) and received some money each year. I guess CS works similarly…I think their honors program is a bit more comprehensive?? Engineering doesn’t actually offer honors classes…basically, if one has the gpa, it is worth doing for early registration times and scholarship money, so if your son was invited to join honors…think seriouslly about it!

Our family has made it work (this year only…have two in college). Definitely fill out the continuing student scholarship applications each year.

UT has money to give out, but you have it right: most of it goes to Honors students. I suggest you look for outside scholarships and see if your son is interested in the Honors program later on.

Thanks for quick responses. I will ask my son to apply for honors after freshmen year.

Another thing is
My son already committed beause we heard that UT has less housing and it is first come first served. It seems we should wait for financial aid package from school (No hopes because EFC is high) so that we can negotiate with school. But now as he commited, do you think still possiblity for negotiations to get fin aid or scholorshipts?

my son is an OOS freshman in CS at UT. He was also a National Merit Finalist and other academic awards, but no scholarship. We had him apply for the department scholarship last year, but there were fewer than 30 for ALL CS students, including graduate students. He has heard this year on campus that more funds go to Turing Scholars for the undergrad awards. If your son also applies to FRI, then there is the possibility of earning money in the labs, and a 20 hour/week position starting sophomore year makes him eligible for in-state tuition. My son is in FRI, but cannot add that into his class load and keep up grades. We were offered $47k in loans last year from UT, so did not even bother filling out a FAFSA this year.

My daughter received a scholarship letter in the mail yesterday from the College of Natural Sciences. We are in Florida so it takes several days to receive snail mail from UT. (postmarked 3/22 and arrived 3/25)
The very first line of the letter references her acceptance into Turing Scholars so perhaps they do favor the honors programs over other high achieving students when giving money.

We are curious if this is her entire financial package since it came from CNS and not the financial aid office. She is on spring break this week so she is going to call the financial aid office today to see if they might be sending a letter soon too. It’s going to have to be a very big number or a oos waiver offer to be able to attend. We aren’t sure if she is already out of the running for the OOS waiver since it wasn’t part of the award letter. Hopefully, a phone call today can help answer some questions.
She is desperate to go to UT!

Hoping to get some more info today and will share it here in hopes it will help someone else who is waiting.

Our son is a jr student @ UT in ChemE. He was top twenty @ a large high-performing TX public high school. He had one B in high school & an ACT of 35. He did not get any scholarship $ (had full ride offers many other places). Our daughter is heading to UT in the fall & is a NMF. Not expecting any money. Sadly.
For the most part, UT awards for financial need not merit. Luckily it’s a great school that is still a decent value if you’re lucky enough to live in state.

My son is currently a freshman turing scholar. He received no scholarships . One thing to consider is that the turing scholars are highly regarded by tech companies and do very well at getting summer internships which pay a lot. There are an abundance of internship and paid research opportunities for cs students - especially the turing scholars. My son will be paid more than enough to cover 2 semesters of tuition at his summer internship.

I just got off the phone with the OSFS and they are “just packaging” financial aid notifications for freshman. Only a few have been sent already.
The letter she received did offer her a guaranteed position in the Freshman Research initiative with “summer research fellowship opportunities worth up to $2500”. Unfortunately, the out of state portion of tuition is $22,000 a year. So basically, working all summer (and not coming home to see her family) would cover less than 10% of her tuition for the next year. According to FAFSA, I have around $60K a year that we should have available to pay for college…If I had that much money left over each year I would not be driving my old Kia. Do they not understand that I have a mortgage to pay and a retirement to fund? How do they come up with these ridiculous numbers for EFC?

^ Completely agree with gritsmom. I’m completely self-reliant (have been since I was 15 years old) and my annual wage affords me ZERO DOLLARS of tuition assistance according to the FAFSA. Apparently I have enough EFC to fund my college education - cash. That’s news to me!

A few thoughts. Most state schools are in the business of educating students whose parents pay taxes to the resident state. An out of state student should not really expect the school to pony up need-based aid for out-of-staters that don’t pay a dime of taxes to the state.

Also, my recollection is that most any student is automatically eligable for Stafford Student Loans up to $5500 first year, either subsidized or unsubsidized.

@gritsmom I got my notification of financial aid today via e-mail (telling me to check CA$H). Everyone else should be getting their awards (if any) shortly.

FAFSA sets the Expected Family Contribution, not the University. That EFC keeps us from getting need-based aid for in state schools as well as out of state.

I’m possibly attending UT Austin this fall as well. I’m pretty sure I applied for Civil Engineering and got accepted into Honors. I’m a national merit finalist as well. I haven’t named UT as my first-choice school yet because I’m still looking at my options, but in regards to financial aid-- I got a $5000 (per year) scholarship from honors, and the rest of my financial aid package was loans.

@schmegel: Was the $3000 specific to your daughter’s national merit finalist status, or was it a university merit scholarship?

We received Financial Aid, UT is offering all Loans. No Scholorships. According to that letter Cost of attendance is almost 27K per year.
My son got academic excellence scholarship from University of Michigan which is almost same ranked school as UT for Comp Sci.
I would like to contact Financial Aid officer at UT to see any possibility to get aid.
Anybody got success to get aid after contacting with Financial aid officer at UT?
Any suggestions how to negotiate with Financial officer at UT?
Thanks in advance

Based on our experience, I would put the cost to be closer to 21k to 23k.
Also another thing to consider: Ut comp sci students are highly recruited for paid summer internships. Many earn 5k to 10k per summer starting as freshmen. My son noticed that many of the students at his internship this summer are from UT, MIT, and California schools.

It seems getting internship is easy for Turing scholars only.
But my son is going to be in Entry level(regular) CS program.

I would like to know from you or your son about internships for non Turing Comp Sci students.
Is it possible to get internships for non Turing Comp Sci students in good companies?
Any advice on how to get internships in Freshmen year summer?

I asked my son about your question. He told me that he knows of one non-turing that got a paid job with google. He is not familiar with any other non-turing students. But he wanted you to know that at the Natural Sciences job fairs there are around 150 companies and the great majority are looking for CS students. All the turings that he has heard of got jobs and companies are still calling and emailing students looking for interns - so my son is guessing that they are needing non-turing students as well. You could call the department with that question - they might have statistics about how many non-turing students had internships in the past summers.
