Hi UTMother,

Thank you very much for the quick response. It is really good news that non Turing student got intern at Google. My son’s dream is to work at Google.
Hope he will also get it.
Best Regards

I am curious: what is the average financial aid package from UT? So far, it seems that people - even those with an EFC of 0 - are offered relatively little grants and scholarships; instead it seems to be mostly loans.

Actually I know around 4 people that have received at least around half their cost of attendance and they have an EFC of 0. Only one that I know of received around 13k total for 4 years and the rest in loans. Of course… There’s plenty of people I haven’t asked but there are certainly people that get scholarships and grants.

What I think is important to take away from this is that the sample size on College Confidential is very very small relative to the complete freshman population matriculating in the fall; consequently, we hear very little about how much UT may or may not give their students. UT does not advertise many of their scholarships, especially ones funded by private families or specific departments. Simply, the math comes down to the fact that there’s a limited number of funds and a lot of students to give it to and as EFC goes down the students likelihood of being on CC also goes down (a quick look at any of the “results” threads on any college page will show you that low-income students are a minority here - I mean EFC of 5000 or less, not saying that everyone here is rich, obviously).

I will say I have received very generous scholarships from UT and my EFC is above the Pell Grant range. My family is comfortably middle class, we are not rich and the full cost of UT would have demanded some lifestyle changes and cuts which we were prepared to make but once we received the scholarships it really lifted a burden off my parent’s shoulders; I was so happy that my hard work was able to pay my parents back for all the work they have done for me. So for Juniors/parents looking out there, the scholarships do exist, they are few in relation to the incoming freshman (also most go to Honors students).

What I believe is going on with UT scholarships - they are mostly for recruitment purposes.

With Pell (5500) and Texas (5000???) grants , SEOG (2500???), top 10% scholarship (2000), small tuition grant, work study and Stafford or Perkins loan most of students with EFC 0 can get enough aid to cover COA (last year it was around 25000, but from my experience it’s actually several thousands less). So UT/ UT departments offer scholarships to students they really want. They can replace loans with scholarships, of course, if there is need.

So whatever scholarships UT has, these scholarships go to students UT wants to recruit. If college has an honors program they go to honors students first. If there is no honors program they go to top students.

Also, some students who were offered scholarships can chose to go elsewhere (ivy or something similar), so after May 1 the scholarships they rejected would be offered to somebody else.
