No science senior year

So my school is kind of different in the sciences. Freshman year we take a general science course (super easy, honors class was a joke). In sophomore year, we take both ecology and biology which prepares us mainly for the state test in biology. That’s all the science we are required to take. I took chemistry this year, even though it’s not required. I’m not really a math/science person, so I did not register for any science class next year. Instead, I took a full-year calculus course. It’s basically one semester of dual enrollment calc and one semester of AP calc. The rest of my schedule includes APUSH, AP English Lit, and some classes at a local four-year college. I’m not sure exactly what college classes I am taking yet.

Will not having a science course hurt me even though I am not going into STEM? I have already taken above what my school requires and I am taking AP calc in the place of a science course. I really do not want to drop any of my AP courses, and the DE calc is a prerequisite for AP calc. Should I try to make it up by taking a college level science course? I also considered trying to self-study AP environmental science, as that is mostly just memorization. Will that be enough or will colleges rather see a physics course or more advanced science course?

When I asked my guidance cousenlor about senior year courses, she just said “well, I mean, you could really take any course you want. Whatever you want.” It was not much help. I already have my 4 science courses, but I’m not sure if I should take another or not. Any advice?

You should probably take a physics course. It doesn’t have to be AP but getting general knowledge about physics could help a lot and it will look better than no physics.

I also recommend taking physics. Some schools require three lab sciences and expect biology, chemistry and/or physics. Sometimes they don’t accept things like a general science course to meet that requirement. I don’t think not taking a science senior year would hurt you, but I think taking one will help you.

I agree that you should take physics. If you’re aiming for a top college they will want to see that you have taken physics, regardless if you’re going to major in STEM or not.

I fourth the motion that you should take physics. I’ve had friends who went to Ivies and they majored in the humanities, but still took physics. Competitive schools want to see four years of sciences. I think it would help you strengthen your application a bit.

Do you have a particular school you’re set on going to?
I have to disagree with the other posters. I didn’t take a science class this year (I’m a senior) and I got into all 5 of the schools I applied to (granted, they were all in state schools, so if you’re planning on attending Ivies, disregard my comment). However, if you’re interested in physics, go for it! If not, don’t stress yourself out with a million APs - just enjoy your senior year.

If you can take it through dual enrollment, figure out what the college offers that’s “physics for non majors”.
