No students will be taken off the waitlist this year

I contacted my admissions officer, and it's very tragic..but no students will be accepted from the WL pool.

Here's the actual email

Thank you for your Email. It's really nice to see that you are still so interested in Washington University; we very much appreciate it.

We have recently evaluated the status of our wait list. Our freshman enrollment deposits are rather higher than we expected -- more than filling our originally anticipated freshman class size. As such, it appears that we will not use the wait list to admit any additional students. We know that this not the best news for students on the wait list; admissions decisions are never easy and never predictable.

You should be receiving a formal announcement with this information within the next several days, as will all students on the wait list receive this information.

Be in contact if you have any questions at any time. We hope to help you in any way that we can. Thank you, sincerely, for your interest in Washington University. We honestly appreciate it, and we are confident that you will enjoy every success and happiness at whichever college you have chosen to join in the fall.

There is another thread like this on the forums… but this E-mail confirms what people have said and it I guess it is now confirmed that freshman class is bigger than anticipated (though this might change as people have multiple enrolled)
I guess we’ll see. Thanks for the additional input ;)

so much for washu’s waitlisting stereotype

What stereotype? They have often used the wait list as a “soft denial.”

no, their usual stereotype is they waitlist overqualified kids and then call them up on the waitlist, ask if they would go if accepted, and if they say yes, then accept them.

never got the email, oh well. also I disagree with the overqualified waitlist, they just waitlist a ton of folks

“their usual stereotype is they waitlist overqualified kids”

That’s what all non HYPSM schools actually do. There is no evidence to back up the WashU stereotype of waitlisting overqualified kids. If you had got into the school and had come to the school for prefrosh week, you would know that there were many students who got into HYPSM. So, if you believe that those who got waitlisted were overqualified, then you are saying that those who got into WashU and HYPSM are less smart that those who were waitlisted.

Why they are sure that they are not using the wl? What if the enrollment number drops remarkably over the summer?

WashU uses past statistics for “summer melt” to project final matriculation numbers. Since some “summer melt” always occurs; that means that WashU has received more than enough deposits to off set projected “summer melt” and still end up with at least the desired number of students for the freshman class.

**“Summer melt” refers to students that send in deposits and later decide not to attend.

Ah, I see. But who knows what’s gonna happen. What if the summer melt is so huge that the number of students who actually enroll does not fill all the spots for class of 2014? Does WashU accept students from the wl? lol
Just kidding but seriously anything is possible.

^ What if half of the currently enrolled students are abducted by aliens? At this point, you should just accept the fact that WUSTL will not be going to the WL this year.

After the school has informed everyone on their WL that they won’t use the WL, chances are… they won’t use the WL. If the numbers do drop below the normal freshman class size or people leave WashU during their first year, then they will use their transfer system instead.

As Jersey13 stated - The bottom line is - The WL will not be used this year. Unless, of course, Jersey13’s Aliens do show up - at that point “all bets are off”, as long as the Aliens are not overqualified.

Good one ST2!
