So I'm thinking about applying to Boston College as a transfer and I see that they have no Supplement Essay. So I'm just curious as to how they select the students that they will accept. Is it based on GPA, extra curricular activities, SAT scores, etc ??

If it’s via the CA, which I assume it is, then there’s a main essay about why you want to transfer and what your goals are. And since there’s no supplemental essay, you could (should IMO) include why BC is good for you.

Oh yeah, the CA essay would probably be what they look at. And I totally would include BC in my essay, but I’m gonna be applying to two other universities through CA too, so I really can’t :/

Isn’t changing the essay for that reason kind of like cheating? I feel that if the common app people wanted to give us this option, they would. Certainly they know that some schools don’t have “Why us?” essays. I’m in this position as well, but I’m going to submit the same app to all schools. Plus, no offense to all those who have replied, but with something this important, I’m not going to take anyone’s word unless they represent the school to which I’m applying.

The CA does have a statement that your CA essay should work for all of the schools that you apply to. So, if you’re uncomfortable ignoring their “warning”, they by all means keep your essay the same.

However, my view on this is that the CA was developed to help students and colleges simplify the process, not to add their own rules about how you should answer the questions that a college asks. Note, they only say that the essay should remain the same, why so? How does changing your essay differ from changing your activities, LORs or anything else on the application to suit a school? And I have never seen a college say that it expects a uniform application, they don’t care if you swap or modify essays or anything else as long as it’s the truth.

I like to hear this, always go to the primary source when possible! So have you called up the schools and asked if they care if you modify your main CA essay to include why you like their school?

^IMO it is. I was addressing the member who thought it was cheating, not wanted by the colleges, etc. to customize essays because the CA says not to. In the end it is up to each applicant to decide what they are comfortable with.

Thank for all of the replies guys. I’ll probably call up BC and ask them whether or not I should tailor the essay for them.
I appreciate all of the help! :D
