I called the UC Davis FA office and the woman on the phone told me that they don’t reward work study to incoming freshmen. I’ve never heard of that, has anyone else heard differently? I’m saddled with loans so I could use work study.

Work Study is a gift, not an entitlement. If the school has run out of funds, it has run out of funds and they cannot award you more out of nowhere. The time where kicking and stamping your feet to get what you can’t have has long since gone by, as you should know being a college freshman. Your best bet is to do what you need now to attend and lobby for workstudy (next year) or non-workstudy based on- campus employment opportunities (for this year)

That’s not what I was asking, cool your jets.

For the most part, work study isn’t given to freshmen because. My opinion on that is because most freshmen will decide not to look for a job until their second year, they don’t want to ‘waste’ what could have been someone else’s benefit if they had received the award.

That being said, finding a job (if you have the right skills) isn’t painfully hard. I managed to land a job on my first try/interview, and although I had work study, the job didn’t even require it Also, there are many jobs that students choose not to take… for example, working at the DC or the Silo (handling food). Beggers can’t be choosers, so if you really need money, you may want to apply for those jobs.

jobs.ucdavis.edu <- This site used to be MUCH more user friendly… I still don’t know how to really use this site, but it will be your bible for on-campus jobs :)
