Noise Level

I recently bought a 120W amp for my electric guitar.. and let's just say it goes LOUD. Is that going to be a problem in college dorms? Am I even allowed to bring such loud things?

Keep the volume down :P

For the literal sake of sanity, leave it. But then again, I’m not your roommate, so do as you please.

Maybe you should’ve turn the volume up very loud? Otherwise your roommate is probably going to resent you.

Check the housing policy…I know SSU doesn’t allow amplified instruments in the res halls, but your dorm might have different rules.

Thats why they come with volume dials haha. Also, If you want to practice but need to be whisper quiet, buy one of these:

[1/8" Stereo Jack to 1/4" Stereo Plug Headphone Adapter - RadioShack.com](http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062468)

Plug your headphones into the hole, put the big end in the amp output jack and you’re good to go!

Yes I guess I could do all that… but it just sounds so much better when it’s loud :)

Get headphones.

As someone who lives beneath a kid who thinks that he is God’s gift to guitar.

Turn your effing amp down.

I (and others) have been ****ed when a guy a floor above and three rooms down plays his folk guitar. Instruments are always iffy in college. Just use the earphones, or you could probably play it like Friday and Saturday nights for a few minutes and be fine. Especially if you’re good.

Don’t do it. Everyone on the 3 floors above and below you will secretely hate you.

ask the school

Here’s the thing… I don’t really care if people hate me or not. :stuck_out_tongue:
I just care about the school’s rules.

120W o.O are you insane?

My 22W fender DRRI is unbearable in the house at the volume above 2-3 depending on which guitar I’m playing. Jeez when playing huge auditoriums with my school jazz ensemble I can play unmic’d at 5-6!

Get a small practice amp that has a headphone input… or bring an acoustic. I’m debating between getting the new Clapton LP that came out or getting an acoustic for college. (Clapton is god…)

Either way I’m not bringing any of my current electrics to college unless I get a cheaper one. Too valuable…

You should really take other people into consideration, Jasonconfused. You’re in a shared dorm with roommates, possibly suitemates, and (I’m assuming) pretty thin walls with tons of people in your direct vicinity. If you don’t respect other peoples’ concerns, they’re definitely not going to care about yours. And they will definitely be concerned about an obnoxiously loud guitar.

Yes… yes I am insane :)

My housing agreement doesn’t allow amplified instruments, but I use my amp anyway because I never turn it up very high, and lots of people play their music at a higher volume, so I don’t see what the issue is. My amp is only a small 10W one though. 120W is unnecessary for a dorm.

No, they should let you play as loud as you can

Well from the look of things it seems I’m going to have to buy myself a practice amp for when I go to college.
So what are the chances of getting my guitars stolen? I would bring one electric and one acoustic… a lot of people tell me to leave them at home but I take my playing very seriously and would not be able to live without them…

"Here’s the thing… I don’t really care if people hate me or not. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not sure about your residence hall in particular, but where I live, there’s courtesy quietness - basically the policy is that if someone asks you to turn it down, you have to turn it down. If not, that person can go to an RA, who will ask you to turn it down. If you don’t listen to the RA, you get in trouble.

Seriously, don’t be a ******. Realize that people around you don’t want to hear the loud noise, and furthermore, likely have studying or work to do.

If you’re interfering with the life of others, that’s being pretty inconsiderate.

On the topic of the amp…the school may or may not allow it. But if you don’t use it too loud, it likely won’t be a problem (ie, they won’t care unless you make it an issue).
