Nom Interviews

Hi everyone!

Well, I just had two of my nomination interviews done! I think I did okay, but I will have to wait and see.

Anybody have any good interview stories / moments?

Heres mine:

I was interviewing for West Point, and they asked me what my major would be. I mentioned German, and they said, "Okay, but suppose you got stationed in Asia? How will your German help you there?" I was like oh ****. I talked about using my knowledge of German to help make connections between / language, cultures in Asia, etc... That question was probably the worst one of the day!

Hope to hear other good moments! SLS3P4S

haha my story is much worse. I already had gone through two interviews and this one was a senatorial interview. I went into the interview being confident and answering the questions honestly. They asked me questions about my leadership positions, what West Point means to me, and other interesting questions such as: If you were sent to North Korea to talk with Kim Jong Il what would you do? and if Kim Jong Il said that if you kill your commanding officer he will destroy all nuclear threats, would you kill your commanding officer? I said I would not kill him because loyalty outweighs the other choice. Then the interview was coming to an end, and they asked me if an Iraqi boy stole information from you during a mission, what would you do? I said I would shoot the kid, because the mission and my fellow soldiers are at risk. The reaction the interviewers gave me were like "Are you crazy?!" and they told me I could have just captured the child. But it was a funny experience and the interviewers laughed with me, but I got the point across that even though killing the boy is inhumane, the mission and my fellow soldiers come first.

oh jeez. that was kind of an awful answer, i cant even lie.

have you ever seen that Saved By The Bell episode where AC Slater is applying to West Point and he has Zack stand in for him for his interview? Zack shows up and acts like Rambo....basically you, but I bet you didnt wear a curly mullet wig and bandoliers.

Haha nice, I would have peed my pants had I gotten questions like those. Sounds like you did okay under the pressure. Good luck to you on your nominations.

Wow, are those types of questions common? That's kind of intense. I have my MoC interviews coming up. I'm not that nervous but maybe I should be. :) I was only expecting the obvious "why do you want to go to West Point" questions. Are you interviewed by a panel of people? Did you actually meet your MoC or was it just a committee?

redhead:

At ours in WI we didnt actually meet our MOC; I don't think you do in most states. Ours were set up on panels; we got two or more people interviewing us at the same time and they fire questions at you for 30 minutes or so. Just make sure you are polite and think about your answers, they sometimes throw in really weird questions to see how you react under pressure.

Good luck! Make sure you tell us how it went!

Those questions are actually kind of cool, I can't wait for my interview now! I expected most to be just boring ones verifying things about school, leadership, and extracurriculars. I hope mine is like the rest of yours. Also good luck to anyone else with interviews coming up!

Any idea how long it takes the Congressional offices to get back to you? It's been about two weeks now and I expected to have heard.

My interview (back in 2001, in the great state of Hawaii) was with my Senator's aide. He was retired military and asked me a few questions about being an Army brat for warm up, then asked where I saw the Army in 20 years. Being a CONFIRMED nerd, I love the Army Times, and was up on all the current concepts and lingo. I talked about small, interchangable units (Hello, BCTs) and every soldier a Warrior (hello, new Army campaign)...I also did Forensics in high school, and my event of choice was impromptu. Made me quick on my feet.

Relax, be yourself, speak slowly and clearly, and THINK before you open your mouth. Five seconds of silence collecting yourself is completely worth 30 seconds of bull.... because you have nothing to say.

the reply time depends on which state you live in and how many candidates each congressman interviews. i know that one of the senators in FL starts sending notification in late december (and his interviews are novem 16). it all depends.
ps-which SLS term did you attend?
