What kind of scores do you need for an loa? I had a 30 on my act and 3.90 gpa and said yes or whatever the good answer was to every single question except the one about being a captain of a team. I’ve done everything else to say yes and they said I was ‘competitive’ and that I will receive a letter with a kit of instructions in July. By the way, I retook my ACT and feel 32+ potential so if I update that on my account will they send me an loa if I qualify or will they make me wait anyways?

Why are you concerned about an LOA? First, USAFA doesn’t give out many of them. Second, it is just an advanced notice that you’ll be accepted (provided you get a nom. and pass DoDMERB). Other than letting you know early, it doesn’t do a whole lot.

They are extremely rare unless there is some sort of sport involvement (recruited athlete or contact with the coach at the least). I think they only give out a couple hundred, probably less now since the class sizes are smaller. The primary purpose of the LOA (as explained when I got one) was to help the Academies stay competitive with other colleges that offer scholarships and ask for commitments in the fall. If I were you, I wouldn’t even think about it. Assume you will know in the Spring like everyone else, and if you know sooner, it will be a happy surprise.

I am concerned
- Because I’m curious
- Because this decision and my knowledge of everything concerning it will affect my life tremendously
- Because it is a sign of extreme accomplishment amongst other extremely accomplished individuals
- Because I have a right to the knowledge of college based questions of all sorts as per the the purpose of this site’s entire existence.

Let’s not be so snappy next time and simply answer my question in a polite manner or leave others to it. Besides all that, thank you for the information.

I don’t think you have any “right” to this knowledge. You may have the ability to post college related questions on this forum, but you cannot choose whether anyone will respond or what form that response might take as long as the the reply falls within the site guidelines. Criticizing those that took time to attempt to help you will not solicit much additional assistance.

You have been given accurate polite responses to your original post. You may accept that “free” advice, ask follow up questions or seek your answers elsewhere. Good Luck!

Your goal should just be to get an appointment period, forget about LOA’s…if it happens, great, but getting an appointment at all is the best thing too.
