I'm a junior and had a couple questions regarding nominations:

I'm seriously considering WP as a school I would love to go to, but am not completely sure I want to go for it so I was wondering two things, first whether it is looked down upon to seek a nomination even if the academy isn't for sure your first choice, and two, at what point should you begin seeking a nomination? I have good scores, curriculum and decent ECs so I'm not really worried about getting in if I decide to, just the nomination part.

Sorry for the run-ons and thanks for the info

start writing letters to ur reps in march. check their website for dates when they first start excepting and the usma website for the letter format. send it in asap.

in my district i would say it is looked down on to apply for a usna nom if u kind of want it. i live in san diego a major navy town. we have 16-25 (according to my blue & gold officer) kids go in each year. with only 5 districts at most 10 kids can go in with representative noms. so representative noms are very competetive. they fill it with 10 HIGHLY qualified people.

however, its not competetive for usma and usafa. there were 4 usma noms. the ten slots werent completely filled. so in that case it isnt looked down upon because u arent taking someone elses slot.

i know others will disagree with me but when 10 people really want to go with all their heart and you think you do its not really fair to take their spot. this is just my opinion.

If you have a serious interest, go ahead and apply to the academy and your members of congress (MOC). Check with your MOC's websites and they will tell you the deadline for seeking a nomination. In our state the deadlines were in October and November.

FYI. Geeting an appointment to any of the academies is much harder than receiving a nomination to the academies.

"have you considered going to the SLS at west point?"

Yes, but I'm going to be really busy this summer, I'll probably only be home for a couple of weeks.

Another question, Sparkle, does that mean each rep. can nominate 5 kids for each academy? I thought he could only nominate 5 total to all academies.

If I may- Each MOM can nominate up to 10 candidates for each open slot (5 max at each) they have at any of the academies (USMA, USNA, USMMA and USAFA)...the USCGA does not require a nomination.

yes, what navy2010 said. i hear SLS is a great program that will either make you love/hate the academy. good luck with what you decide to pursue this year.

Nalcon, go for it, start the application process if you are interested. Never tell them it isn't your first choice though, that will hurt you. Make sure you check into it a lot, but its better to try and decide not to do it than to not try and regret it.

Another question, I have allergies, but I take a nasal spray each morning and night and am completely fine, that won't get me medically disqualified will it?

Not quite sure what your summer plans are, but if there is any way at all that you can fit in SLS, it would be to your benefit. The program can really help you to decide if you even want to pursue the grueling application process. My daughter arranged to take her finals early so that she could attend the first week as she was also busy that summer. Her high school allowed it. SLS/IAW really gave her the opportunity to see what barracks life is like, eat the food - even MRE's, get up (really, really) early, do PT before a teenaged body is even awake, talk to soldiers who just returned from Iraq, sign up for classes that seem really interesting and then placed into classes in which she had no interest, and most importantly for her, meet kids her own age who had so many of the same interests and goals.

You are thinking about pursuing a life changing path about which you are a bit unsure. SLS is an opportunity to learn more in order to make the most informed decision possible. Good luck!

i have a question
im kind of new on this and saw u talking about it earlier
u said only 10 people in the same district can get a nomination?...
does this mean two people in the same school can't both get a nomination? I might be wrong. I just always wanted to go to WP and I know theres somebody else in my school who is also really qualified. Could we both get nominations?

sorry. I wasn't very clear. I know for a fact he wants to go to West Point and so do I. If we were both qualified, could we both get nominations?

Thanks. But does happen often?
Im not sure of how many people in my area apply to service academies, but I think we could both be competitive for admission.

Yes it can happen and is very likely. they will take the 10 best people and give them a nomination. i know that there were about 2 people that applied for the same academy from the same HS and both got the nomination from the same congressman.they won't take a less qualified person just because your HS already has 1 person nominated.

Adding to the last post. If you are qualified, you will get a nomination. Do not worry about other people, just yourself. From my HS (public; 1800 students), we had 2 guys get noms from our congressman to Navy (I was trying to be the 3rd). Another got a nom and LOA to Army. Then myself, b/c they couldnt get me a nom from my congressman to Navy, they are interviewing me for a nom to Air Force.

Also our district sent 4 to Navy and 3 to Air Force last year (never heard how many Army).

The moral of the story is that if you are well qualified, your chances are very very good.
