ok so my district kinda sucked this year for USMA, everybody was really competitive and my district ranking was trash. I got interested in USMA late in the game and my interviewers knew this, so maybe that had a big influence on my rank. I was ranked like 5th but usma sent me the letter saying i am academically/physically qualified...

So I had my USMA application reset, and now I'm an applicant for the class of 2011 for USMA, USNA, and USAFA. I am seeking 3 nominations from my congresswoman, and can only interview with one panel. So I know that my district ranks the candidates and sends their list off the usma, almost leaving usma out of the admissions game, but does this mean they do the same for USNA and USAFA? If all I need for USNA and USAFA is a nomination and then for USMA I need them to rank me near the top, I would interview with USMA. Does anybody have an idea how my district would treat USNA and USAFA nominations?

USxA is NEVER left "out of the admissions game" by a congresscritter. They simply do their jobs for once and pick the people to nominate, and USxA does the rest.

That said, unless USMA has different criteria, some congresscritters send in a list of names in order, and others simply send in a bunch of names and let the Academies pick from them. It would seem logical to me that (barring a requested difference from one SA as opposed to another) they would submit their nominees for each Academy the same way.

So, if you got ranked 5th this year for your choice (USMA), then your options seem to be to get yourself into USMAPS (if offered) or go to a regular college for a year and WORK YOUR BUTT OFF. Make sure your congresscritter knows exactly what your goals are, and pesker them with examples of your dedication to going. Get as many references as you can (like professors, EMPLOYERS, military officers, etc.) to write on your behalf.

Don't lose faith. If the SA's were easy to get into, they wouldn't be worth a damn. Keep trying.

my district, at least for USMA, gives USMA a list of the candidates in the order that my district wants them ranked. all USMA does is decide if we're academically/physically qualified or not. so past that, they're pretty much left out of the ranking thing. what I am wondering is if this will be the same method for the other academies for my district or if they're independent, and some dont do the ranked thing.

I'll be going to UIllinois so I don't even think I'll be in town when the interviews happen, so maybe I can try to get that done early... my MALO was at the interview last time so maybe he could be helpful about that, and then maybe the BGO interview would count as the congressional interview if he's on that panel.

Why can you only interview with one panel? Do you mean you're only seeking a nomination from your congresswoman and that you specifically have to say which academy you want her to nominate you to? Wow, that's tough. Ours were all jumbled up and they could nominate us for more than one if they wanted...

Out of curiosity, why not seek nominations from your senators as well?

Taffy, just talk to your Freshman Advisor in the unit about the ROTC nomination. You shouldn't have to do anything as he'll get the required documents from the university and recommendation from the CO.

I know for NROTC, each CO is allowed to give only 1 nomination per year, and USNA has 20 appointments reserved for candidates with NROTC nominations.

Not sure about USMA, but I imagine it's similar. I'm sure you can find more info on their website.

great! thanks DMeix, going all private investigator style :)

marmadillo, my congressional district organizer guy told me last year that although i was seeking nominations to multiple academies, i could only interview with one panel (USMA, USNA/USMMA, or USAFA) due to "time constraints"(this district has like half the candidates of most...). I tried emailing him last night but the email had an instant reply saying he doesnt work for eshoo anymore and my message has been forwarded, so maybe the next person with his job will let me interview with everybody, which would be great.

i will be in air force rotc, so I'm not exactly sure how that works for nominations to usma and usna, but i think i read on the usma website that i can get a nomination from an army rotc det or an honor unit for any other rotc branch, im just not sure if U Illinois is an honor unit.

its kinda hard to get a senatorial nomination in california i think, but ill be applying for nominations from all the sources i can.

I believe the title 'honor unit' only applies to JROTC units in high school. I've never heard of a real ROTC unit with any kind of 'honor' title.

As for getting an Army nomination from the Air Force unit, again, talk to your Freshman Advisor. He should know what to do and be able to take care of everything for you. As you can probably tell, out of the officers in your unit, you will get to know your Advisor at lot faster than the others. You will pretty much go to him for....everything.

under header: The Secretary of the Army is annually allocated cadetships in the following categories:

* Presidential (Sons and daughters of career military personnel)
*
* Enlisted members of the Regular Army Enlisted members of the Army Reserve/National Guard
* Sons and Daughters of Deceased or 100% disabled Veterans
* Army Junior and Senior ROTC programs and Honor ROTC units of other services

Please stop quoting the header and read the whole thing, JROTC units are the only ones that can be an Honor Unit, Senior ROTC units do not receive the award.

My understanding is only for USNA but in our district and how we were told, the MOC have various choices in how they nominate. They can nominate up to 10 for each appointment slot and they typically put them in order of rank. But, they can send the 10 names and have USNA pick based on their criteria, or they can have a principal nominee where they decide (if triple Q'd) who gets the appointment, or they can just send in 10 names. So, I think from your post that your MOC does that for USMA. I would guess they do the same for the other SAs, but I don't think it is out of line to ask them. Each MOC can have (I think) up to 5 people at a service academy at any time. So, their available slots sometimes are greater; sometimes less. Plus, if you have a LOA, typically they will "find" you a nomination source, sometimes borrowing from other state's quotas. My DD asked where she was ranked by her MOC and was told 3rd so it wasn't a secret etc. The first two got in and she didn't (but then got NAPS) and then got the top nomination spot the following year. Remember that your congressmen are representing you in your district and asking questions only makes you seem more serious about the process. Good luck this year.

That has always been my understanding as well.

As in, "5 people at EACH Service Academy", IIRC.

In my case, my MOC did the rankings, giving a primary and then alternates in order. I was Third Alternate my first time through, then got Primary while at NAPS.

Great minds, and all that jazz! :D

Bump~seems many of the questions asked lately may be answered here~ Or at least spoken too. Seems the more information there is, the more questions are generated! :)
