Non-Art major: Is it worthwhile to include an art portfolio?

Junior DD is a very good artist (drawing and painting) but doesn’t want to study art in college (she wants to major in Biology, Biochem or Animal Science). However, she doesn’t have much in the way of ECs and she does spend a considerable amount of time outside of school on her art. She has several sketch books filled with drawings which she gets complicated on all the time. It would be great to display that side of her.

Is there a way to show her work on the Common or Coalition App, other that to say “I do art”?

Yes, for sure send in a portfolio if it’s an important extracurricular for her.

In general I would only suggest sending a portfolio of it is of extremely high level (art school level or close). Perhaps your D could ask a HS art teacher to evaluate her work.

If she does decide to send a supplement she needs to check each school’s website to determine 1) if art supplements are accepted and 2) how they should be submitted.

She could use her talent for ECs…ex. making posters for events, illustrations in newspaper, literary magazine etc.
