Non Art Schools With Art Programs

Hi!

I'm in the process of applying to colleges, but I need to finalize and really choose the ones that I'm going to send the application to. I've done college search/match on naviance.com and collegeboard.com, but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of colleges that would still be good for me.

I'm applying to a few art schools (Academy of Art, Pratt, Parsons, RISD), but I'm also interested in pre-med programs as well as art programs.

Idealy, I would go to a college (not an art school) that has a pre-med program so that I could explore that field of study, but also have a good/respectable art program (preferably including fine art and fashion).

I may be being too specific here, but I just want to get a good education with art along with it.

If anybody knows of any schools like this, please let me know!!

ps I prefer schools that are in California or east coast!

UCLA has one of the best fine arts programs in the country.

Why are you applying to art schools? It sounds to me as if you would prefer liberal arts to fine arts. You should only go to art school if you are are serious about art; there’s not much opportunity to “explore” anything else at art school. On the other hand, you can go to almost any college or university and get a good education that includes art and a huge array of other subjects.

That said, there are a few art schools that will allow you to cross register at neighboring colleges so you can get a taste of liberal arts. RISD allows you to take classes at Brown; and vice versa. Art Center allows you to take classes at Occidental College --not vice versa. I went to Brown and took 4 (the maximum number at the time) classes at RISD. I vastly preferred my RISD classes to my Brown art classes, although I did enjoy most of my non-art classes at Brown. You need to think carefully about art vs. medical school. Universities and liberal arts colleges offer you the chance to explore, but the best university art departments will not compare favorably to a good art school.

Look into NYU. You can earn a BFA in studio art and have an 18 credit minor–more classes if you come in with AP credits. You would be able to use these credits to take some of the pre-requisites for med school.

Check out RIT, they have a great art college though most people associate it with engineering and sciences -

How much can your family afford? What is your home state?

I live in California, in a particularly wealthy area, but my family doesn’t have a lot of money.

^^^

Are they low income or do they have a good income, but money is tight?

What are your stats?

Your financial situation and your stats will LARGELY determine where you should apply.

Depending on your stats and finances, you may need to apply to…

UCs
Cal States
Schools that give good aid
Schools that give good merit.
