Non-audition MT or Acting programs?

As of right now I have a list of 7 bfa mt programs that i plan on auditioning for next year and 1 in-state choice! It seems like the non-audition programs are the hardest to come by. I live in louisiana, so as far as location goes I'd be happy with any school in the southeast ,northeast or mid-west. If anyone has suggestions i'd very much appreciate it!

I’m looking for non-audition MT programs too. Take a look at the Big List (stickied on this forum) and all schools with a ~ in front of them don’t require auditions. There’s not a ton, but there are quite a few.

ok thanks!

thanks alot!

Haha soozievt, did I hear you sigh before you posted that?

theatregeek - A couple from your neighbor state of Texas:
[St. Edward’s University: Theatre Program](http://www.stedwards.edu/hum/thtr/index.html)
[Southwestern University: Sarofim School of Fine Arts: Theatre Department](http://www.southwestern.edu/departments/theatre/)

St Ed’s and Southwestern are both schools we visited and think very highly of.

In addition to being very appealing, St Eds was very generous. yay. Actually so was Southwestern but they cost just a bit more.

It’s looking about 99% certain my D will be attending St Eds in fact - (still waiting on one piece of data before we can discuss it with our coach and sign a deal) I realize some people want the BFA but my daughter always leaned towards a BA in a smaller liberal arts type college and both of those schools offer that. That they are non auditioned does not mean the programs are either too big or with non quality students in them in schools like this - the schools aren’t big enough to have huge classes anyway, and they do have a review after a couple semesters. I rather like the review idea instead of auditioning to get in for my daughter because many of her best qualities (her attitude, work ethic, etc) don’t come across in a two minute audition.

There are a few other good programs close to us also (we are only 50 miles from LA ourselves) which you will no doubt find in those threads. :-)

Hi snapdragonfly! Any chance you and your D will be coming to Austin to see Carousel at St. Ed’s? My D has a couple of friends in the production and I have heard great things about the show.

Snapdragonfly- Congrats to your D! I’m thrilled to hear she is possibly attending St. Eds. I’ve worked with their faculty for years now thru private lessons and Summer Stock Austin and they are a great school if that’s what you’re looking for. Two of the most amazing male actors I’ve ever been able to work with came out of there. And I heard a rumor they may be adding an MT concentration. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know, but the program is growing either way.

OOOO OOO! When is it? Yeah we would love to see that!!

And yes they are adding an MT concentration. Just in time!!! Woot!

Carousel is April 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 PM; April 10 and 17 at 2:00 PM

Apparently the shows are selling out so I would get yout tix now if you can make it!

When Kelsey gets home today we’ll see what is going on next weekend and if we can swing a quick trip to Austin. Now that we are past Prom which was this past Saturday (and the biggest blowout this town has ever seen, everyone is talking  ) we only have her dance recital solo to really deal with but there are weekend rehearsals and stuff. After this past fall and spring nothing seems all that scary anymore. LOL.

This looks like a great program and a really good option for the kids who want a BA program! I’m really sad that (this year, at least) they scheduled their Scholarship Audition Weekend the same weekend as L.A. Unifieds. I hope they don’t do that again next year!

D might be very interested in this school but she would definitely need a scholarship or it would be out of reach.

It happens that because of mono, this is the ONLY school she didn’t do a talent audition for. It would have been just for money, not admission. Fortunately for my sanity, in this case, like many schools, the talent money is capped and isn’t really huge - enough for books or something, very very rarely exceeding a few thousand and normally less than two - so we don’t have to beat ourselves up about it too much. (and it’s too late anyway so I just have to keep telling myself, don’t go there, don’t go there!!! lol!) BUT even with her not getting any, she still got the best offer from them than from anyone else of the same caliber. She got the same amount of money from a couple other schools but they cost a pretty good chunk more and so this ended up being, for us, actually about the same amount of money as it would be for her to go to a flagship school in the same city. lol. Because that particular school gives no money to students like my D. So - pretty compelling.

Class rank and standardized test scores will get a decent amount of merit aid and they have quite a few really good scholarships for community service, look at their website.

The program is not nationally known, but it has a good regional reputation. The school itself is a great fit for my D. So - hard to ask for more.

I found that there was such a difference between websites from one school to another. One thing I loved about this school was that their theater program is given such emphasis. I think that says a lot about how a school treats it’s theater program. Their website is like, “hey, we are a really great school and all OH LOOK AT OUR THEATRE PROGRAM”. Such a contrast between another school we looked at whose theater website has been “under construction” ever since we first looked at it almost a year ago…clearly not a big priority at that school, we crossed it off the list immediately!!! (Only looked at it because her best friend who graduated a year before her went there…not known for theater, and it’s clear to see why. HA.)

I’m sure there will be days that either she or I will be aggravated with it as there is sure to be with every school (or institution of any kind) on the face of the earth, but I feel really good about it and keep feeling better as we go along. Unlike some of her options where I just kept getting a nagging little voice about one thing or another…you know that voice. I have found best not to ignore it…

thanks snapdragonfly for the insight on St. Edwards! I’ll definetly be looking into it more
