What are good universities for a piano performance major given my stats? Thus far, when asking around, I've mainly heard talk of Indiana and USC, both of which seem to be stretches to me given my GPA and SAT scores, (3.32 now in my Junior year, and 1900, respectively, although I expect the SAT score to rise quite a bit.)

The more complicated part is that I've never taken APs, but took many music classes at the local community college, including two years of music theory, ear training, ensemble classes, repertoire classes, and then an additional year during which I took choir and music history.

At the community college, my GPA is a 4.0, but how much does that really help my application when auditioning to a non-conservatory school?

If I had to sum up my situation I'd say that I have an extremely strong musical education, but when it comes to core classes I feel like I've severely missed out on math and science.

Man, that sounds like a good case for a conservatory, if your playing is there. I don’t know; the correlation between universities with strong music programs and strong academics is pretty high. Indiana sounds good. Maybe UNT, UMiami, UW-Madison, Temple, SMU, Boston U? I don’t know if your stats are in the range at these places, but maybe your abilities will give you the tip if they aren’t. I don’t know piano specifically, so if I’m full of it, someone let me know and I’ll shut right up.

For most University performance programs, your audition would be the deciding factor. Many schools have a minimun GPA/SAT requirement, but that is usually about 3.0 and your SAT’s are cetainly good enough.

I know that when my D went for visits at some universities, they actually told her to stop taking AP classes and focus on her instrument.

I would suggest you focus on finding schools you like with studios/teachers you like, and then look at their requirements. Some good audition based Univeristy music programs that come to mind: UMiami, UMich, Rice, Ithaca, UT-Austin, Indiana; although I can’t speak to their piano programs.

CIM would be worth a look for piano. The latest Tchaikovsky Competition winner just finished his sophomore year there…

I’m going to link you to this thread, which is someone else asking about the same thing pretty much: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1173179-good-schools-piano-performance.html

In my post, I gave a list of music schools that offer a piano performance major. Look through that, as well as other people’s posts.

I’m a piano performance major btw, starting this fall :)
