Non-Custodial Parent Info: Next Steps

Hello Fellows.. Happy New Year.

As a follow-up to my previous post (<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1557983-non-custodial-waiver-thoughts-and-advice.html#latest">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1557983-non-custodial-waiver-thoughts-and-advice.html#latest</a>), my son did apply through regular decision, completed the Profile & FAFSA. Since we do not know the whereabouts of his Mom, we indicated that in both FAFSA and Profile Applications (e.g., through address Unknown).

We received acknowledgements from all the school but non have specifically asked us anything about the missing non-custodial parent profile.

Do I act proactively and ask them what to do or wait till they specifically request this? And if I were to contact the financial aid offices, should I do this via email / phone?

thanks - Yw

Do those CSS schools require NCP info? Not all do.

If they do require, then you need to contact each school and ask for a NCP waiver.

“we indicated that in both FAFSA”

You didn’t need to say anything with FAFSA…only custodial parent info is used.

It’s up to you to call the financial aid offices of these schools and ask, if you can’t find the info on the web sites. Admissions often has nothing to do with financial aid, so putting it on FAFSA or other fin aid forms isn’t going to be noticed, until student is accepted maybe, and the Fin Aid dept starts working on the packages and by then, that’s late to be asking about what you should have done for a NCP waiver if the school requests one. As Mom2coll says, the FAFSA doesn’t even care about NCPs as it only asks for custodial parent info. Find out which school require the NCP waiver first, and then contact each of them to ask them what you need to do next. Again, check on their websites to make sure all that info isn’t already there. Some even have the forms right there for students to down load and have completed with instructions there too,.

Mom2CollegeKids,

thanks - I realized I didn’t need to do anything with regard to the FAFSA… I will contact each school as advised.

When you complete the Profile, the confirmation page will tell you which schools require NCP info. My kid had 2. I emailed the general financial aid offices at each school, and both replied with the waiver application within 2 hours.
