Hi, so I'm really hoping someone can help because I am tearing my hair out. I have posted here because it's specific to MH at the moment. I'll bullet point this for quickness.

Parents divorced (2011)

Dad moved back to Italy (his home country)

I have no contact/contact information with him, neither does mum

Requested to waive non-custodial parent information

To waive it I need a third-party statement from either a doctor, therapist, school counselor, member of the clergy.

Problem is we have none of the above, and as I finished high school before the divorce my school officials are not able to provide a statement.

SFS don't seem to understand that I have no way of providing information, so I really need this waiver.

What do I do? :( Has anyone else had a similar issue? I really need some help (by the way, I'm an intl student from the UK)

Most private liberal arts colleges have a process whereby you fill out an application for a waiver of the obligation of the non-custodial parent to provide financial information including W-2, tax returns and related information. Is the non-custodial parent’s location known? Is he reachable by e-mail, letter or telephone call? If so, then the committee at each school’s financial aid office will be unlikely to issue a waiver. If the non-custodial parent’s location is not known and/or he cannot be contacted explain why to financial aid and ask for a waiver. It will also be important to indicate if the non-custodial parent has previously provided financial support in the past. Contact the financial aid office as soon as poossible to get this resolved as financial aid awards cannot be calculated if this remains unresolved which process is ongoing right now as decisions will be sent out in a few weeks.
Good luck.

Thanks Danielle2400, I am in contact with the fin aid office, the issue is that they won’t accept the waiver request without a statement from a ‘professional third-party’ and we don’t have a suitable person familiar with the situation. We have a statement from a family friend but that apparently isn’t good enough, I am hoping they become a little more flexible…I can’t be the only person in this situation :/

Could the Italian embassy in the UK give a statement that this person is no longer living in the UK? What about court records (attempts to locate for child support?). I would also recommend you contact the USA Education office / Education Advisory Service at the American embassy in London. They may be able to direct you to a source for a third-party statement that would be acceptable to MH.

Explain the lack of other available persons such as clergy, doctor, school counselor to verify status of non-custodial parent. See if they will accept letter from one of your father’s siblings, parent’s etc. to verify his current status. I understand this is a delicate situation but getting your financial aid situation resolved is dependent on satisfying the financial aid office’s requirements on this issue.
