What happens when the non custodial parent suddenly comes into some money and doesn’t want to fill out the css form because they think it will cause the student to loose aid, but not filling it does the same… whats the option there any advice?? Please I don’t want the option to be telling my kid he has to plan on leaving the school.
If the school requires the non custodial profile and the non-custodial parent does not fill it out, the student will not receive any institutional aid. This means that you will have to pay out of pocket or he will have to leave school
If the school requires the non-custodial parent Profile, and it is NOT completed, the school will NOT process any institutional need based aid…at all.
That could REALLY reduce your need based aid…like to a $5500 Direct Loan, and whatever amount of the Pell you are entitled to.
Options? There are no options…if the school requires it, and the NCP doesn’t complete it…that’s it.
Contact the school and ask them. It sounds like your kid is a currently attending the college. Are you sure they require the non-custodial form for returning students?
there are schools that require the forms be filled out every year
From another post, it appears that this is a parent of a rising sophomore. Since she’s asking, the school must require NCP info.
Does the NCP realize that FOR SURE the child won’t get aid if he doesn’t fill out the NCP info? Does he want his child to have to leave the school? If he wrongly hoping that the school will just give aid w/o his info?
The financial aid application for the upcoming year will be incomplete…if the NCP form is required, and is NOT submitted. At most colleges ONLY complete applications are considered for institutional need based aid.
Thank you all, The school does absolutely require it.
Ill have to find away to convince him to do the paper work. Again thank you.
@MP1972 how did he come into $? Not all windfalls are income for FA, and as an asset, unless the sum is very huge, it should not have a dire impact.
For instance: inheritance $ vs a big cash bonus at work.
it was a business settlement, I believe thats income.
If it’s a one time income, and this will destroy your DD’s aid for fall AND the school is unaffordable, then perhaps she can take a one year leave of absence and this one time blip won’t continue. It will continue to be an asset but if put in a protected place or spent, maybe it will have little/no impact.
And the NCP is unwilling to use some of the windfall to pay for college? Do you know that? Seems like a good use of the funds, no?
When did he get the settlement as income? The financial aid forms for 2017-2018 uses income from 2015.
Of course, if he has that money sitting in the bank, it MUST be reported as an asset.
So…for the 2017-2018 forms, this extra income could be in the bank account and would be an asset.
BUT if disbursed in 2016, it will be income for the 2018-2019 forms.
